Florence woman succumbs to injuries received in crash
A 72-year old Florence woman died over the weekend from injuries she suffered in an October 14th crash on Highway 126 near Badger Mountain. Sharon Ann Joslin was a passenger in a car driven by her husband, Richard. They were westbound when their Toyota Prius was struck by an oncoming Dodge Durango. Oregon State Police say 52-year old David D. Beck of Springfield was eastbound on Highway 126 near milepost 36, traveling uphill and negotiating a curve. As Beck passed another vehicle he lost control and crossed the centerline. Sharon Joslin was transported to River Bend hospital where she died Saturday. Her husband and Beck each suffered minor injuries in the crash. Beck’s passenger, 51-year old Melanie Whitehead, also of Springfield, was transported to River Bend with non-life-threatening injuries. Troopers from the Florence Area Command office are continuing the investigation.
Circuit Court Race Goes Write In
A typographical error has turned the election of Lane County Circuit Court Position 7 from a solo-candidate race to one with four horses. Jay McAlpin was appointed to the position in May. When he checked to see about filing for election, the State Elections Division website did not list an opening sohe didn’t file the paperwork. A typo on the website had incorrectly listed position as being in Lake County… not Lane… and that’s why it didn’t show up. Because of that, no candidates filed for the race and now, in addition to the incumbent McAlpin, there are three more people seeking the seat in write-in campaigns. Long time former Eugene municipal judge Alan Leiman is seeking the slot, as are two relative newcomers… Vincent Mulier and Chris Bevans. Mulier is a defense lawyer and part time university philosophy professor; Bevans is a partner in general law practice.
Flo City Council
The work load for the Florence City Council is a little light this evening. They’ll hear the usual department head reports; approve the minutes of the previous meeting and hear from any interested citizens. They’ll also talk about the goals they set for themselves earlier this year… and when they should sit down and set their goals for next year. City Manager Jacque Betz will provide a report on the city’s progress towards the 2012 goals the council set out in January. They’ll also review the calendar for 2013 and set a timeline for beginning the next goal setting process.
Viking Pride
Area businesses were encouraged to show their “Viking Pride” last week during homecoming. Several establishments decorated with blue and gold, some of them set up rather elaborate displays of Viking athletic memorabilia…. Florence Eye Clinic was the second annual Pride winner for their display… Oregon Pacific Bank was a close second according to judges.
