EUGENE, Ore. (AP) – A Eugene school’s wrestling team was feeling pretty good about raising funds by collecting scrap metal — until thieves muscled in on the action. Churchill High School coach Scott Kearney expected Saturday’s fundraiser would bring in more than $3,000 Saturday night thieves were discovered plundering the stockpile before it could be hauled away.

ASHLAND, Ore. (AP) – Lloyd’s of London says the liability insurance it provides for the Ashland Gun Club covers bodily injury and property damage, but it won’t pay any damages related to lead contamination from ammunition. The Mail Tribune reports underwriters filed documents in federal court in Medford after three gun club neighbors sued the city and the club, which sits on city land.

VANCOUVER, Wash. (AP) – Sheriff’s deputies say a 13-year-old boy from Portland has drowned at a Vancouver, Wash., park. Officials say they responded to calls Saturday afternoon after the boy was spotted in the water at Kline Line Park. Authorities say Dimaggio M. Lee died at Emanuel Randal Children’s Hospital later in the night.

MEDFORD, Ore. (AP) – About 50 employees of the new REI store in Medford spent their first day on the job pulling weeds and doing other habitat restoration work along Bear Creek near downtown Medford. REI outreach coordinator James Hetland told the Mail Tribune that working on the restoration project will give the new employees a better understanding of the community. The store is scheduled to open Oct. 5.
