PORTLAND, Ore. (AP) – Jobless rates in many parts of Oregon inched higher in July. State figures released yesterday show Benton County continues to have the lowest unemployment rate in the state. However, the seasonally adjusted rate did increase from 6.1 percent in June to 6.3 percent in July. Crook County had the state’s highest unemployment rate – 14.1 percent.

PORTLAND, Ore. (AP) – The Benton County district attorney says officers were justified in their use of force against a suspect who exchanged gunfire with them on Aug. 11. Sgt. David Peterson and another law enforcement officer were shot while searching for California fugitive Demecio Cardenas, who had crashed a stolen car. Authorities say Cardenas fired at officers.

ALFALFA, Ore. (AP) – Reckless burning charges have been filed against five men whose target practice is believed to have ignited a 35-acre wildfire in Central Oregon. Deschutes (duh-SHOOTS’) County sheriff’s officials say the substance the men used in target shooting, Tannerite, is “expected to cause some kind of flash” when struck by bullets traveling at certain speeds.

THE DALLES, Ore. (AP) – Yamhill County authorities have arrested a man who has allegedly provided methamphetamine to mid-level drug dealers in McMinnville and Sheridan. Sheriff Jack Crabtree says 54-year-old Mark Lynn of McMinnville was taken into custody Monday afternoon after a traffic stop on Interstate 84 east of The Dalles. Lynn was booked into jail on drug charges.
