Here is the latest Oregon news from The Associated Press
EUGENE, Ore. (AP) – A $1.5 million lawsuit accuses the Oregon
Department of Human Services of failing to prevent the starvation
and beating death of Eugene teenager Jeanette Maples in 2009. The
Register Guard reports the lawsuit was filed in Lane County on
behalf of Maples’ estate. Her mother, Angela McAnulty, is on death
row after pleading guilty to aggravated murder. Her stepfather,
Richard McAnulty is serving a life sentence after pleading guilty
to murder by abuse. The suit says the agency failed to reasonably
respond to reports of abuse.

COTTAGE GROVE, Ore. (AP) – Two recent graduates of Cottage Grove
High school are dead after the vehicle they were in crashed into a
delivery truck near Cottage Grove. Authorities identify the victims
as 19-year-old Derek Kovack and 18-year-old Matthew Knee. A third
teenager in the car is in stable condition at Sacred Heart Medical
Center at RiverBend in Springfield.

PORTLAND, Ore. (AP) – The founder of Zupan’s Markets in Portland
has died of injuries suffered Monday night when his motorcycle
collided with a car. A nursing supervisor at Legacy Emmanuel
Medical Center told The Oregonian 66-year-old John Zupan died
yesterday. Police say the driver of the car was speeding and
driving erratically when it crossed the center line and hit Zupan’s
motorcycle head-on in Portland. The car’s driver was booked on
assault and DUI charges.

SUNRIVER, Ore. (AP) – An injured eagle named Patriot is expected
to continue recovering at the Sunriver Nature Center, thanks to a
$1,000 donation from a 9-year-old girl. Patriot was unable to fly
or stand when it was found in June near Crane Prairie Reservoir.
KTVZ reports the bird is back on his feet. Kira Neilsen set up
donation jars in Bend and elsewhere and raised the money she
delivered yesterday to help pay for medications and vet bills.
