KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) – Felix Hernandez won his fourth straight decision, Jesus Montero homered and drove in four runs as the Seattle Mariners defeated the Kansas City Royals 6-1 yesterday. While he leads the majors with 143 strikeouts, Hernandez struck out only three, tying his season low. The temperature was 98 at the first pitch and 105 by the time the game ended.
SEATTLE (AP) – Droves of supporters for a proposed new arena that could bring the NBA back to Seattle turned out at a public forum put on by the Seattle City Council and King County Council. While a number of opponents made their objections known last night, the forum was mostly filled with green- and gold-clad fans urging the councils to approve the project.
MANCHESTER, England (AP) – Carmelo Anthony and Deron Williams responded to lineup change with 19 points apiece, and the U.S. men’s Olympic basketball team beat Britain 118-78 yesterday in an exhibition game. The British, also including the Portland Trail Blazers’ Joel Freeland, hung with the Americans for 10-plus minutes before the visitors’ athleticism ran them off the floor.
ANCHORAGE, Alaska (AP) – Montreal Canadiens center Scott Gomez might have another pro sports career ahead of him when he hangs up his skates. The Anchorage native won a new, $50,000 Acura MD X yesterday when he hit a hole-in-one at his own Scotty Gomez Foundation Celebrity Golf Tournament. Gomez is entering the sixth of a seven-year contract with the Canadiens, valued at $51.5 million.
