NORTH BEND, Ore. (AP) – Authorities in North Bend say a man has died from a self-inflicted gunshot wound after firing at police. The World newspaper of Coos Bay reports that police discovered the body of 27-year-old Danny Retallick in the backyard of his family home early yesterday – a rifle by his side. Officers waited 10 hours before entering the property and only did so after deploying tear gas. But Retallick had been dead for hours.

HILLSBORO, Ore. (AP) – Hillsboro police say a 40-year-old woman was killed early yesterday and investigators suspect her estranged husband. The husband, 45-year-old Steven Givens, was later found dead in a vehicle off U.S. 26 east of Manning. Lt. Michael Rouches says the man’s death appears to be a suicide, but police are still investigating. Rouches says three children were inside the home when Cindy Givens was killed, but they were not injured.

COLTON, Ore. (AP) – Oregon State Police say a log truck rolled over, dumping its logs across Oregon Highway 211 north of Colton and leading to a nearly three-hour closure of the road. No one was injured in yesterday’s accident. Trooper Scott McLeod says a truck pulling a loaded log trailer went out of control on a curve, onto a soft shoulder and rolled. The driver, 55-year-old Errol Knobf of Molalla, was cited for failure to maintain a lane of travel.

SALEM, Ore. (AP) – Legislative officials have recommended eliminating 188 state jobs, most of them from middle management. The recommendation of the Legislative Fiscal Office was developed based on the Legislature’s mandate earlier this year to permanently cut $28 million in state government spending. The Emergency Board is scheduled to vote on the plan tomorrow. Many of the 188 positions slated for elimination are currently vacant, so the number of layoffs will be smaller.
