Taking a look at Coast Radio Sports…
It was a close fought battle on the track in Winston as the Siuslaw Vikings won the Far West Boys District title Saturday afternoon. It was close, with Siuslaw accumulating 188 points to the Bulldogs’ 183 ½. The boys went one-two-three in three separate events with Hayden Schaffner winning the 800 followed by Neal Larson and Brian Schofield. The trio of Matthew Campbell, Mack Marbas and Mitchell Butler swept the top three spots in the 15-hundred and three-thousand. Jacob Egan won the 300-meter hurdles and John Johnson won the pole vault title. The four-by-400 relay team of Schaffner, Marbas, Campbell and Seth Campbell claimed the district crown as well.
For the girls the finish was reversed with North Bend taking the team crown 174 to 142 over Siuslaw. Katy Potter won the 15-hundred and the three-thousand. Ashlee Cole won the discus with a personal best throw of 95-feet, 9-inches. Both the boys and girls teams will advance to the OSAA State Finals at Eugene’s Hayward Field this coming weekend.
On the diamond Friday… the Viking Baseball and Softball seasons came to an end. Softball on the road against number one ranked Henley, losing 11-nothing. While at home, the Hidden Valley Mustangs bested the baseball Viks 8-3.
Beaver Baseball took two of three Pac-12 games from the Washington State Cougars over the weekend in Pullman, opening Friday with a 10-2 win, losing Saturday 9-5, then taking the rubber match yesterday 7-5. In Eugene, the #6 Ducks swept the Seattle Redhawks in three non-conference games 6-nothing, 5-4 and 6-1. The Ducks will face the Pilots in Portland tomorrow afternoon, then Oregon and Oregon State will wrap up the regular season this weekend in Corvallis for Civil War Baseball.
It was a near-record turnout for the 34th running of the Rhody-Run Saturday morning with 420 runners lined up for the start. The 5-K results were record setting as Thomas Kreuzpeintner of Eugene set a course record of 16:49 seconds to be the first across the line. Kreuzpeintner, known as the “Bavarian Bullet” also holds the men’s 10K record, set in 2010, at 34:10. Gino Gaddini of Corvallis was more than a minute behind him in 18:07. Kim Bricker, of Charleston, Oregon was the women’s 5K winner in 19:55, followed by 13-year old Celie Mans of Florence in 22:02. In the 10K, Alfonso Galvan Mendez was the men’s winner in 38:12, folloed by Anthony Collins in 39:56. Jenna Ward of Yachats was the women’s 10K winner in 47:20. Behind her in second was Kristina Payne in 48:18. Full results can be found on kcst.com.
