Track and Field

Hayden Schaffner swept the 800 and the 1500 meters and the Siuslaw boys finished second in the team standings at Friday’s Wally Ciochetti Invitational in Cottage Grove.  Jacob Eagan was second in the 300-meter hurdles with a personal best time of 42.27, and freshman Billy Jones cleared the bar at 13-feet; 7-inches to win the pole vault.  The Viking Girls were 11th overall.  Katy Potter was the highest finisher with 2nd place in the 1500.

Viking Softball Falls to Fourth

On the diamond Friday afternoon the Sutherlin Bulldogs swept the Siuslaw Softball team into fourth place and a long, lonely road trip later this week.

Game one was scoreless after the regulation seven.  The Bulldogs scored one in the top of the tenth, but the Vikings came back and tied it in the bottom half.  Three more Sutherlin runs in the top of the 11th were too much to overcome however, and the ‘dawgs’ won game one 4-1 in 11 innings.

Game two was close most of the way, but Sutherlin pulled away for a 12- 6 regulation victory.  With the number four seed, Siuslaw will take on the number one seed out of the Skyline League Thursday afternoon on the road… likely number one ranked Henley.

Baseball Splits

The Baseball Vikings used seven hits and three Sutherlin errors to take game one of a double header 8-3 Friday.  Ryan Smith was two-for-two, Jake Thompson three-for-four with a home run and four RBI.  Maclay Saxon was two-for-three at the plate for the Vikings as well.

Game two was a far, far different story.  The Vikings held a slim one-run lead after 2 ½ innings, but the Bulldogs hammered out nine hits in the bottom of the third on the way to 11 more runs… then cruised to 24-13 win.  Siuslaw will be at home Friday afternoon where they’ll face the number three team out of the Skyline League… likely the Hidden Valley Mustangs.
