PORTLAND, Ore. (AP) – Police say an hours-long standoff ended when 44-year-old Portland man shot himself to death inside an apartment. Officers had responded to a domestic disturbance call around 2:30 a.m. Sunday. When they arrived, they talked to a woman who said the man had assaulted her and threatened her with a gun. They also learned three children were inside the apartment. Negotiators talked with the man, who let the children leave around 9 a.m. Contact was then lost with him. Police sent a robot inside the apartment and found the man dead in the bathroom from an apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound.

PORTLAND, Ore. (AP) – The state of Oregon has paid $1.2 million to 17 current and former inmates of Coffee Creek Correctional Facility to settle lawsuits stemming from sexual abuse by correctional workers, but security weaknesses identified three years ago remain unaddressed. The Oregonian reports illegal conduct at the women’s prison in Wilsonville has been traced back to 2002, about one year after the prison opened, but that reports of abuse continue. Two men have been arrested this year.

ALBANY, Ore. (AP) -Albany police say a 43-year-old man swiped the department’s Oregon flag and a U.S. flag just after his release from jail. Officers tell the Albany Democrat-Herald that Craig James Pitcher was charged with theft. Department workers noticed the flags were absent on Friday. They cued up surveillance tape and spotted a man taking the flags at 1:14 a.m. Officers say they identified Pitcher, who had been released five minutes earlier from Linn County Jail and who was seen in the video.

SALEM, Ore. (AP) – Opponents of a proposal to ban the use of Native American names and images as mascots for Oregon high schools are seeking a waiver to allow districts to work out agreements with local tribes. The Albany Democrat-Herald reported yesterday that the Oregon Board of Education is considering a rule that would strip state funding from any school or district that continues to use a Native American mascot after July 1, 2017. A vote is expected at the board’s meeting on May 17.
