DETROIT (AP) – Felix Hernandez allowed only a run in seven innings, rookie Alex Liddi hit a two-run homer and the Seattle Mariners went on to beat the slumping Detroit Tigers 9-1 last night. Hernandez gave up a solo homer to Brennan Boesch in the third and not much else. The right-hander yielded four hits and three walks, giving all of the free passes in the first. The Tigers have lost five of six after starting 9-3. Seattle has won two consecutive after losing four in a row.

PORTLAND, Ore. (AP) – The Portland Timbers have signed defender Steven Smith, who spent the last nine seasons playing in his native Scotland and England. The 26-year-old Smith played for Scotland’s Rangers FC from 2003-10, appearing in 55 matches. He moved to England in 2010, playing for Norwich City FC and Preston North End. He has played in both the UEFA Champions League and Europa League. The Timbers also waived midfielder James Marcelin yesterday.

LOS ANGELES (AP) – Soccer power Barcelona has licensed its name to the company All American Sports Enterprises Inc. to open youth camps in the United States. The company said yesterday that camps will be held in July and August in Los Angeles; New York; Portland, Ore.; San Antonio; San Jose, Calif.; and Seattle. A technical team from the Escola youth program will travel from Spain “to oversee preparation and execution.”
