BEND, Ore. (AP) – A fire official says an attempt to light a cigarette ignited natural gas in a Bend cottage, causing a blast and fire that damaged the home and critically injured one man. KTVZ reports two other houses were damaged to a lesser extent yesterday. Deputy Fire Marshal Susie Maniscalco says a cigarette lighter or match ignited natural gas from a furnace with a loose natural gas line connection. A man identified as Michael Flint was flown from a Bend hospital to Portland’s Oregon Burn Center.

SILVERTON, Ore. (AP) – A state police bomb squad investigated what officers called a suspicious object in a wrecked car near Silverton yesterday. Police didn’t describe the object specifically, saying that its appearance raised the possibility that it could be dangerous, and the bomb squad took steps from a distance to “render it safe.” Police say 21-year-old Ivan Shubin of Turner was driving a car that left the road and hit a utility pole on Oregon 213 about 6:45 a.m. He was hospitalized and expected to live.

ROSEBURG, Ore. (AP) – Bones found on a Southern Oregon ranch are being tested to determine whether they are those of a Roseburg man missing since 2009. The Roseburg News-Review reports a rancher found clothing and ID Monday belonging to Clayton Pankey, last seen at a gasoline station in Sutherlin. Searchers found skeletal remains nearby. They were sent to the state police forensic lab in Portland. After he disappeared, Pankey’s van was found abandoned at a spot about 10 miles from the ranch.

PORTLAND, Ore. (AP) – Oregon State Police say they’ve arrested a Washington state man after a high-speed chase and hours-long standoff along Interstate 84 east of The Dalles that closed a stretch of the highway for several hours. David Clay Jennings of Kelso was arrested for investigation of hit and run, reckless driving and attempting to elude. Police say he was involved in a hit and run, led authorities on a pursuit at speeds approaching 100 mph, then refused to exit the truck after stopping.
