MEDFORD, Ore. (AP) – A Medford man accused of beating his toddler stepson has now been charged with attempted murder. The Mail Tribune reports that a grand jury has added that count to charges facing 27-year-old Matthew Hyrup, who has pleaded not guilty to three charges. Police say the boy was severely beaten and sexually assaulted by Hyrup on Feb. 23.

SALEM, Ore. (AP) – Jurors have convicted a Salem woman of two counts of first-degree manslaughter and one count of assault in a crash that killed two teen pedestrians and injured a third. The jury also found Sophia Downing guilty yesterday of DUI and reckless endangerment in the 2010 crash that killed Brittney Green and Francisco Cervantes and injured another teen.

MEDFORD, Ore. (AP) – A federal appeals court says protesters can proceed with a First Amendment case against Secret Service agents who were guarding President George Bush during an Oregon visit in 2004. They allege the Secret Service cleared them from the nearby streets not for security reasons, but to get them out of sight. They say Bush supporters and guests were left alone.

PORTLAND, Ore. (AP) – A Portland man who stripped naked at Portland International Airport as a protest against airport security screeners says he was being “nude but not lewd.” John Brennan characterized his act of defiance as protected political speech, but he faces charges of disorderly conduct and indecent exposure for the incident on Tuesday.
