PORTLAND, Ore. (AP) – A group angling to put a bipartisan
presidential ticket before voters has submitted what may be enough
signatures to qualify for the Oregon ballot in November. The
Oregonian reports that organizers for Americans Elect said they
delivered nearly 37,000 signatures yesterday to the secretary of
state’s office, well over the 21,804 needed. The group says it has
qualified for the fall ballot in 18 states and has efforts under
way in many more.
BEND, Ore. (AP) – Should Oregon teachers be allowed to send
individual text messages to students? The head of a Redmond charter
school has been accused of abusing a 15-year-old girl. The Bulletin
of Bend says the Oregon School Boards Association recommends
teachers text only groups, such as a class or team. But the Redmond
Proficiency Academy has expected teachers to be available after
class for student calls, texts and email.
PORTLAND (AP) – Most Oregon state offices will be closed Friday
because of budget cutbacks. The furlough day is the third of 10
scheduled during the state’s two-year budget. The furlough days
don’t apply to public safety agencies such as the State Police and
prison system. The next furlough day is May 25.
TUALATIN, Ore. (AP) – Police in Tualatin say they’ve arrested
two 13-year-old boys in a fire that caused major damage to a
church’s sanctuary, meeting rooms and an attached preschool. No
injuries were reported in the three-alarm blaze at the Living
Savior Lutheran Church. Police say a citizen’s tip led officers to
arrest the two Tualatin boys yesterday for investigation of
burglary and arson.
