Siuslaw Wrestling finishes 6th out of 12 in Regional Meet

Three Siuslaw Viking wrestlers will advance to this week’s 4A State Tournament in Portland.  Peter Tupua dominated the 185 pound weight class at Saturday’s regional meet between the Skyline Conference and the Far West League in Grants Pass, winning all of his matches by pin.  At 220 pounds, brother Sonny Tupua came away the champion with a win in the finals.

The third wrestler on the mats this coming weekend will be Jesse Kuntz who finished fourth at 170 pounds.  Edwin Vasquez also finished 4th, but lost a ‘wrestle-back-challenge’ against the 5th place finisher at 113 pounds.   Two other Viking Wrestlers competed at the regional meet.  Hayden Miles was fifth in his weight class; Travis Dahlberg failed to place.

Both Tupuas and Kuntz will compete Friday and Saturday at the OSAA 4A Wrestling Finals at Memorial Coliseum in Portland.

Prep Basketball

The Sutherlin Bulldogs held the Viking girls scoreless in the first quarter, then cruised to a 35 – 17 win Friday night to wrap up the regular season.  The loss dropped Siuslaw into a tie for third place with Douglas.  The Vikings and the Trojans will break that tie tomorrow night, seven pm at North Bend High School.  A win would pit the Vikings against #3 ranked Mazama Friday evening in Klamath Falls; a loss means they would still play in Klamath Falls, but would face #4 ranked Henley.

The Viking Boys ended their season on a high note:  Sam Johnson sank a 5 foot running floater in the lane with 4-tenths of a second remaining to give Siuslaw a 54-52 win over Sutherlin. Jake Thompson led scoring with 22 points and nine rebounds.

The Reedsport Braves were involved in 2A Special League playoffs over the weekend in Medford.  Friday the Lady Braves beat Bonanza 42- 20, then fell Saturday to Lost River 45 – 30.  For the Boys, Bonanza came out on top over Reedsport on Friday 49 – 26.

The Mountain West League held their final playoffs Saturday in Junction City.  The Mapleton Girls went up against Alsea for the final playoff slot, but fell short 48 – 33.

Pac-12 Basketball

Jorge Gutierrez and David Kravish scored 17 points each to lead California to a 77-63 win over Oregon State Saturday to keep the Bears tied for first place in the Pac-12 with Washington. Devon Collier and Roberto Nelson had 14 points each and Angus Brandt 11 for Oregon State.

E.J. Singler scored 10 consecutive points in the final six minutes, including a go-ahead 3-pointer with 2:45 remaining, and Oregon held on to beat Stanford 68-64 last night. Singler finished with 20 points, five rebounds and three assists while Olu Ashaolu (ah-SHOW’-loo) added 14 points off the bench for the Ducks.
