Here is the latest Oregon news from The Associated Press
EUGENE, Ore. (AP) – A Eugene photographer who pleaded guilty to
entering a restricted area at Lookout Point Dam has been sentenced
in federal court to 60 hours of community service at the dam. Wiley
Nelson avoided jail in exchange for dismissal of a charge of
unlawfully entering military property. The Register-Guard reports
officials initially feared the intruder who jumped a fence early on
March 2 may have been a terrorist. Nelson said he wanted to take
photos of the water downstream. He told the judge he was stupid to
ignore “no trespassing” signs.

EUGENE, Ore. (AP) – The city of Eugene has spent more than
$13,000 providing security at the home of city Councilor George
Poling, the target of some Occupy Eugene demonstrators. Poling says
the security was needed for the safety of his family. On Christmas
night 15 to 20 people erected tents and danced on Poling’s lawn and
driveway to protest his opposition to Occupy Eugene. Four of them
were arrested. Four nights later, five masked protesters and
topless woman stood on the sidewalk in front of his home. One
struck a gong.

HUBBARD, Ore. (AP) – Oregon State Police say a woman has been
struck and killed on Highway 99E in Hubbard. Police say the
59-year-old woman was walking across the highway last night when
she was hit by a van making a turn. She was flown to a Portland
hospital where she died.

JOSEPH, Ore. (AP) – The Swiss-Bavarian cultural festival
Alpenfest will return next September to the Wallowa County town of
Joseph with beer, bratwurst and the blowing of an 11-foot-long
Alpenhorn. The original organizers dropped the festival in 2008,
but supporters missed it and hope it brings some tourists back to
northeastern Oregon. Events will include yodeling, crafts and a
screening of “The Sound of Music.”
