Individual Dies In Police Custody

The Lane County Sheriff’s department confirms another death involving Florence Police and an in-custody person.  The incident happened around 7:11 on Friday evening when an unruly individual at Peace Harbor hospital refused requests to leave the facility.  Police were called to the hospital and after several attempts to convince the person to calm down and leave the premises, the individual continued their unruly behavior and was remanded to police custody.  The individual, who was released earlier in the day from the hospital, began exhibiting health issues and medical personnel responded but were unsuccessful in efforts to stabilize them.  The individual was pronounced dead at the hospital.  This is being treated as an in-custody case and therefore investigation of the incident has been turned over to the Lane County Sheriff’s department and will be thoroughly reviewed before releasing specifics such as the name of the deceased and the officers involved in the incident.  This is the second death involving an in-custody subject this year and the third death involving Florence Police.  Officers were cleared in the two previous cases.  Coast Radio will continue to follow this story as more information becomes available.

Car Rolls On Side, Blocks Bridge

Friday evening two cars were involved in an accident at the Siuslaw River Bridge causing one vehicle to roll over and blocking traffic on the bridge for more than an hour.  The incident occurred around 8 pm in the evening and one witness said they had seen the truck in question run through a stop sign at 6th and 101.  There were no injuries reported.  Traffic was eventually restored.  Florence Police are investigating the incident.
