Watershed Council Raising Money for Operating Costs

The Siuslaw Watershed Council is having a fundraiser to raise money for operating expenses.  The watershed Council is currently operating it’s projects through grant money that it receives from approximately 30 grants, but Dan Carpenter with the Siuslaw Watershed council says that money is not slated for operating expenses.

“Unfortunately grantors don’t pay to prepare these grants and so that’s where we must bear ordinary business costs.”

Celebrate Siuslaw Salmon is the fundraiser that will be at the Florence Event Center this Sunday the 17th.  Carpenter says there will be live music and food and more…

“Doors are open at 5 and it’s going to get underway at 5:30.  We’re going to have a silent auction and a live auction.  We’ll have live music with AtmoJazz will be there and of course Pavilion will be catering a bountiful meal.”

And of course, Carpenter says there will be Salmon on the menu.  Tickets are 25 dollars in advance and 30 at the door.

Rip City Shakes Up Old Town

Yesterday’s Rip City Tour was a big hit with the kids and adults.  Some of the entertainment staff from the Portland Trailblazers hit town yesterday for a day with the youth at Siuslaw schools.  They started with an assembly at the elementary school and then did a mini basketball camp with the middle school.  At 4 pm they met with Mayor Joe Henry and Florence City Council Members for a Flag Raising at City Hall and then held games and gave away a lot of swag in the Port of Siuslaw parking lot.  Dozens of kids and equal or even greater number of adults were on hand to shoot hoops and compete for prizes.  The Rip City Tour continues in Newport today.  There was a mention of the local Boys and Girls Club receiving a donation from the Trailblazers but that is of yet unconfirmed.

Boys and Girls Club Raising Money For New Building

The youth at the Boys and Girls club are currently learning about business in one of the many beneficial programs that the club puts on.  Money Matters teaches the kids every day skills like balancing a checkbook and making budgets.  And they put it into real world practice selling pies.  Nancy Pierson with the boys and girls club let us know that the pies are worth the price!

“This is a wonderful fundraiser.  It engages the kids.  They’re going to be challenged to be the top seller and they will get a great prize.”

Pierson says she has tried most of the pies from the Willamette Valley Pie Company and that you can trust her when it comes to the quality of the product.  Currently the boys and girls club is getting ready for a new building.

“They’re getting ready to move a building over, actually, for the new teen center that’s going to be going in.”

In addition Pierson says the club is currently getting a brand new kitchen.  So you should be seeing Boys and Girls club members out in the community selling pies very shortly.

Gas Trends High

Irma and Harvey have had an impact on our fuel prices in Oregon. But with the end of the summer travel season upon us and the return to winter blend fuels upcoming prices are beginning to settle in.  The Oregon average for a price of regular gas is up 3 cents from last week and is sitting at 2.92 a gallon.  Here in Florence the average for a gallon of regular gas is 2.69.  Oregon is currently 5th overall in the highest prices in the country.
