City Celebrates Road Completion
The celebration for the completion of construction on Rhododendron drive will be this Thursday at 10 am and will begin with a walk starting at Peace Harbor and end up at Green Trees East for a reception. City Manager Erin Reynolds says that this will not be the last celebration of its kind, since the plan is to continue to the end of the road. Right now it is a matter of getting the finances for it.
“Right now we don’t have funding in place for it, but we’re definitely putting in for the next cycle of grants to continue that pedestrian pathway and road improvements on Rhododendron drive.”
Reynolds says that project is one that residents have wanted to see completed and it is a priority for the city. The added walkways and bicycle lanes, as well as slightly wider lanes improves safety and adds to the beautification of the landscape.
City Celebrates Service
Keeping with the city…Last night the city also recognized 6 city employees for their length of service with the Florence community.
Celebrating 10 years with the city are Public Works Superintendent August Murphey, Sergeant Brandon Ott with the Florence police department and Larry Jenson with public works. Celebrating 15 years is Officer Lynn Larson…. Building Technician Eric Rhines has given 25 years to the city and 30 year recognition goes to Sergeant Harry Johnson who has worked his entire career here in law enforcement.

Free Recycling Event
This Saturday the city of Florence will be providing a free opportunity to recycle items that are not normally accepted. From 10am to 2 pm in the parking lot of Siuslaw High School the Environmental Management Advisory Committee will host its 7th annual Black and White Recycling Event. Florence residents are invited to bring tires, household appliances, and propane tanks that are empty and 5 gallons or less in size. Tire limit is 10 per household and no commercial tires are allowed.
Cloudy Eclipse?
Will there be clouds or sunshine for the eclipse? That is the question. And forecasters are saying that there is a pretty good chance that the western part of the state will have some cloud cover. Estimates range between 40 and 60 percent coverage from the coast to just east of I-5 and then drops to 20 percent as you move further east. These are just estimated forecasts and as any weather experts will tell you that a lot can occur in 13 days. It is also important to note that this forecast was created just for the path of totality, and that areas south may have a clearer view.
