New Rules For ODFW

The Oregon Department of Fish and Wildlife is meeting this Friday in Salem to adopt the 2018 sport fishing regulations.  There are some changes expected to the current regulations not all of which will effect fishing here in Lane County or along the coast.  For example there is a change proposed to the amount of rods that anglers with two rod endorsements can use while ice fishing.  It is being proposed to allow 5 rods.  Along with an additional spring Chinook opportunity in some Northwest zone streams, removing bag and size limits for bass in the Lower Deschutes.  The ODFW will also be briefed on a plan for Cougar Management which does have some interest here in Florence with the recent increase in sightings here.  The updated plan will continue to focus on cohabitation with the large cats, but no major changes are in store.  If you are interested in participating in the meeting the ODFW will live-stream the meeting on its twitter page.  The meeting is set for Friday morning at 8 am.

Port Adds Another Executive Session

The port of Siuslaw has announced another Executive Session for Tuesday morning at 9 am.  This closed door session is in accordance with Oregon Statute ORS 192.660(2)(h).  They will be meeting with counsel concerning the legal rights and duties of a public body with regard to current litigation or litigation likely to be filed.   There is no call as of yet to then open the meeting to public session.

Hot, Hot, Hot

Weather is in the news for this week as record temperatures for the Willamette Valley are expected to have an impact on our weather here in Florence.   Eugene, Salem and Portland are looking at temperatures in the 110’s and higher by Wednesday and Portland will be looking at its 50th straight day without rain on Wednesday.  Temperatures here in Florence will get to the mid to upper 80s by Wednesday and with no rains and dryer conditions the increased possibility for fire means danger levels are very high.  But also, with many homes in the area not equipped with air conditioning it is important to stay cool, drink plenty of water, and if you have loved ones that are elderly and may need help, have a plan to look in on them.

City Plans Celebration

The City has set a date for the Celebration of the completion of the Rhododendron Drive extension.  The event will begin at Peace Harbor Medical center at 10 am on August the 10th. And will walk to Greentrees Village for a reception and featured speakers which will include Mayor Joe Henry.  The project has improved the roadway and bike safety by adding more lane space and a dedicated bike path.
