OSAA State Track and Field; Beavers Continue to Roll; Ducks over USC

Oliver State Champ in the Shot Put

It was a tough day for the Lady Vikings on the track this weekend at the OSAA 4A State Championships.  Destinie Tatum was disqualified in her bid for the 800 meter title and Celie Mans was battling with sickness and was unable to start in the 1500.  Mans did, however manage to take a fourth place finish in the 3000.

In the field events Carissa Oliver over took the field to become State Champion in the Shot put with a personal record throw of  41ft 7 ¾ in. and took second in the discus with a toss of 132ft 11in.

For the boys, Trent Reavis finished fourth in the state in the shot put with a toss of  50ft 7 ½ in. and second in the javelin with a throw of 181ft 11in a personal record for him.

Beavers Set Record

Oregon State Beavers surpassed the 1981 Arizona Sun Devils with a record 27th victory on Sunday against the Washington State Cougars.  The cougars, who were on a hot streak winning their last two series did not survive the pitching staff or the bats of the Beavers.  Saturday evening in Corvallis Jake Thompson recorded a complete game allowing only two hits and striking out 5.  Not allowing a Cougar batter past second all day.  It was Thompsons first complete game in his career.  He is the first collegiate pitcher this year to have recorded 12 wins. And only the Ninth OSU pitcher to reach that mark. His era currently sits at 1.01.

On Sunday’s outing it was a hitters holiday as the Beavers had 12 hits and scored 14 runs allowing the Cougars just 3 runs on the day.

Ducks Take Series Against Trojans

The Oregon Ducks took 2 of three games over the weekend to steal the series from the USC Trojans, and steal they did.  Taylor Travis stole home in the top of the ninth Sunday to finish off the Trojans 3 to 2.  They also won 6-2 on Friday and fell 14-9 on Saturday.

The Lady Ducks advance in the NCAA Softball Regionals by defeating Wisconsin.  Their next opponent in their bid for another National title will be Friday in Eugene against Kentucky.
