Here is the latest Washington, Oregon and Alaska sports news from The Associated Press

OAKLAND, Calif. (AP) — Cesar Valdez pitched in the major leagues for the first time in nearly seven years and the Oakland Athletics beat the Seattle Mariners 9-6 Thursday night. Taylor Motter hit a two-run homer for Seattle in the sixth against Frankie Montas.

EDMONTON, Alberta (AP) — David Desharnais scored late in the first overtime to lift the Edmonton Oilers to a 4-3 win over the Sharks Thursday night, pushing San Jose to the brink of elimination in the NHL playoffs. The Oilers lead the Western Conference quarterfinal series 3-2 with Game 6 Saturday night in San Jose. The Oilers — looking for a bounce-back game after a 7-0 shut out by the Sharks in Game 4 — dominated the first 10 minutes, energized by the roar of the home crowd at Rogers Place.

VANCOUVER – The Vancouver Canucks say they are disappointed by defenceman Nikita Tryamkin’s decision to bolt the club and return to the Kontinental Hockey League. The hulking 22-year-old Russian had two goals and seven assists to go along with 64 penalty minutes in 66 games for the Canucks in 2016-2017, but will play in his home country next season.

MARCOLA, Ore. (AP) — Meet the Mohawk Mustangs. The Marcola School Board voted Wednesday night to drop the Indians nickname and mascot at Mohawk High School. Final approval of the mascot change is scheduled for the board’s May 8 meeting. The Register-Guard reports a committee that sought suggestions for a new nickname received about 400 responses.
