VANCOUVER – Playing against his old team will be special for Vancouver Whitecaps striker Fredy Montero, especially if he can find his scoring touch. Montero and the offensively challenged Whitecaps will host the Seattle Sounders in a Major League Soccer match Friday at BC Place Stadium. The Colombian spent four years playing for the Sounders, becoming Seattle’s all-time goal-scoring leader in 119 regular season games.

VANCOUVER – With the logo of the team that fired him just 72 hours earlier covered by a black curtain on the wall to his right, Willie Desjardins started to go through a list of people he wanted to thank. The former head coach of the Vancouver Canucks began Thursday’s press conference with glowing words about his family, the club and its fans. The 60-year-old Desjardins was fired by the Canucks on Monday at the conclusion of a miserable season.

NEW YORK (AP) — Kelsey Plum is the Number 1 pick in the WNBA draft, going to the San Antonio Stars Thursday night. The Washington guard, who set the NCAA career scoring record, is the first player from the school to be taken first.

SPOKANE, Wash. (AP) — Little-used guard Bryan Alberts is leaving Gonzaga in search of more playing time. The 6-foot-5 sophomore said Thursday he is not sure where he will land but he is expected to seek a Division One program. Alberts is expected to graduate with a degree in economics this summer.
