Here is the latest Washington, Oregon and Alaska sports news from The Associated Press

SEATTLE (AP) — James Paxton shut down Houston for the second time in a week, pitching seven innings of four-hit ball and leading the Seattle Mariners to a 6-0 win over the Astros in their home opener Monday. The Mariners rebounded nicely from Sunday’s ugly ninth-inning meltdown against the Angels when they gave up seven runs and lost 10-9. Paxton (1-0) was a big reason why, keeping Houston’s offense silent long enough for Seattle’s bats to wake up and finally convert with runners in scoring position. Paxton struck out eight and walked two while pitching in Seattle’s home opener for the second time in his career.

PORTLAND, Ore. (AP) — Noah Vonleh made a layup at the buzzer and the Portland Trail Blazers beat the San Antonio Spurs 99-98 on Monday night despite resting starters Damian Lillard and CJ McCollum. Shabazz Napier scored a career-high 32 points for Portland, which won its third straight a day after Denver’s loss to Oklahoma City gave the Blazers the eighth and final playoff spot in the West.

COLUMBIA, Mo. (AP) — A second high school prospect who initially committed to Washington before the Huskies’ coach was fired last month says he will instead play basketball at Missouri. Blake Harris, a 6-foot-3 point guard from Raleigh, North Carolina, announced Sunday on Twitter that he will play for the Tigers under new coach Cuonzo Martin.

EUGENE, Ore. (AP) — Oregon sophomore Tyler Dorsey says he will declare for the NBA draft and hire an agent. Dorsey was a key to the Ducks’ run to the Final Four this past season. It was the first time Oregon had made it to the national semifinals since they won the first NCAA Tournament in 1939.

PORTLAND, Ore. (AP) — Portland State has hired Santa Clara assistant Barret Peery as the Vikings’ new coach. Peery spent last season with the Broncos under first-year head coach Herb Sendek. The team reached the West Coast Conference tournament semifinals for the first time since 2010-11.

CORVALLIS, Ore. (AP) — TCU running back Trevorris Johnson is transferring to Oregon State for his final season of eligibility. Johnson will graduate this June with a bachelor’s degree in criminal justice from TCU. He is expected to arrive in Corvallis in June and will be available immediately as a graduate transfer.
