Ducks dancing in Sacramento; Siuslaw grad hurls a gem

featureCollege basketball:  Ducks seeded high in Mid-West Regional

The Oregon Ducks are the third seed in the Mid-West Regional and will face Iona Friday night Sacramento to open up the NCAA Men’s basketball tournament.  Kansas is the number one seed in the region… with a win Friday, Oregon would then face either Creghton or Rhode Island on Sunday.

The tournament selection came after Arizona edged Oregon 83-80 Saturday night to claim the Pac-12 Tournament title in Las Vegas.  The two teams tied for the regular season crown.  Oregon beat Cal 73-65 Friday night in a conference semi-final.

On the baseball diamond…

Former Siuslaw hurler Jake Thompson struck out eight and allowed just two hits in 7 1/3 innings of work Saturday to lead Oregon State to an 8-4 win over Ball State.  The win capped a four-game sweep of the Cardinals.  The Beavers opened the series Thursday night with a win, then took two games Friday, 5-nothing and 5-one.  The Beavers are 14-1 on the season, ranked fourth in the nation.  They’ll open conference play Friday in Phoenix against Arizona State.

Oregon Duck baseball swept all four games of a weekend series against Santa Clara to improve to 11-4.  Oregon won Thursday and Friday 6-2 and 2-1 before hanging a ten-run shutout victory on the Broncos Saturday afternoon.  Oregon wrapped up the weekend with another shutout win, three-nothing, yesterday.  The Ducks open Pac-12 play this weekend in Berkeley against the Cal Bears.
