(AP) — Marcus Morris scored a career-high 37 points, including Detroit’s first seven in overtime, and the Pistons rallied from a 13-point, third-quarter deficit to beat the Portland Trail Blazers 120-113 on Tuesday night. Ish Smith had 12 points, seven assists and seven steals for the Pistons. The backup point guard was scoreless heading into the fourth quarter but gave Detroit a huge lift down the stretch. C.J. McCollum scored 25 points for Portland.
TUKWILA, Wash. (AP) — The Seattle Sounders expect to have star forward Clint Dempsey in the lineup for Saturday’s season opener at Houston in what would be his first MLS match since being sidelined by a heart issue last August. Seattle general manager Garth Lagerwey and coach Brian Schmetzer indicated Tuesday that Dempsey will be in the lineup against the Dynamo, although how much he plays will be watched closely.
SEATTLE (AP) — Washington freshman Markelle Fultz, the leading scorer in the Pac-12 Conference, has not been cleared by team doctors to play due to a sore knee and may miss the final two regular-season games. Coach Lorenzo Romar said Tuesday that Fultz has yet to be given clearance by the team’s medical staff to return to game action. Fultz has missed three of the past five games due to the knee issue, including last Sunday’s loss to rival Washington State. Romar didn’t rule Fultz out for Wednesday night’s game against No. 3 UCLA but didn’t sound optimistic Fultz would be cleared in time.
WASHINGTON — Testifying before a congressional hearing on improving anti-doping measures, Michael Phelps has expressed frustration over seeing others cheat and says athletes need to believe the system works. The retired swimmer said Tuesday he has a hard time understanding how athletes get around anti-doping tests and that when they do, it’s “disillusioning.” Phelps, the most decorated Olympian, with 28 medals, asked the House Energy and Commerce Subcommittee on Oversight and Investigations to help “ensure the system is fair and reliable.”
