Weekly suppers offer food and fellowship
Four area churches have gathered together to offer dinner to anybody and everybody each Wednesday evening.
Greg Wood – “We just thought it would be good to bring people together and that’s what we do. The target audience is lonely seniors or families or anybody that wants to… wants a good meal.”
Reverend Greg Wood with the Presbyterian Church of the Siuslaw says each Wednesday, from 5:30 to seven pm, dinner will be offered at one of the locations; either the Presbyterian Church, New Life Lutheran, St. Andrews Episcopal, or the United Methodist Church.
Greg Wood – “It’s just all about the food and so whoever shows up and eats… and people sit around the tables and talk and I think we had to run people out of the Methodist Church last Wednesday night because we had such a good time sitting and talking and the cooks wanted to go home.”
Wood says there’s no message… neither overt, nor hidden… and the idea is to just get together and socialize over a meal.
March 1st the meal will be at New Life Lutheran on Spruce Street; the following week at the Presbyterian.
Highway 101 closed by slide near Gardiner
The Oregon Department of Tranansportation reported that Highway 101 between Gardiner and Reedsport was closed this morning by a mud and rock slide. The slide came down at milepost 210, just south of Gardiner. Mud, debris and trees tumbled onto the highway around 8:30 this morning, blocking both lanes. As of 9 AM ODOT said traffic was being regulated through the area by flaggers. Go to www.tripcheck.com for the latest information.

A Lincoln County man has combined his education in fine art with his experiences as a field biologist to create artistic and accurate wildlife images. Ram Papish is the President of the Yaquina Birders and Naturalists and has studied birds and other wildlife for more than two decades.
He is also a prolific illustrator and his work has appeared in many publications, including two children’s books that he also authored.
Papish will talk about birds… and his illustrations… Wednesday evening during the February meeting of the Siuslaw Watershed Council at Mapleton High School. The doors open at six with the presentation beginning at 6:30.
PTA around the world in a day
Around the world in one day is the theme this Saturday during a special event coordinated by the Florence PTA.
Organizers say the goal is to bring the community together and provide education on cultures from around the world. That will help build social connections between the community and schools.
There will be a selection of food along with cultural activities.
The Multi-Cultural Event is at Siuslaw Middle School from 11 to two Saturday… it’s free and open to the public.
Rains could subside this week
As of six this morning the Florence area had recorded 24-inches of rain since February 1st. National Weather Service Forecasters say once we get through today, things should be relatively drier along the coast. But, higher elevations, especially in the Cascades, could see additional snow accumulations through at least Sunday… while the rest of Western Oregon will get some periodic rain showers and an occasional snow shower or two. But, don’t expect any accumulation at low levels.
The relief from the rain could give time for soggy soils to rid itself of the excess moisture and begin to lessen the chances of any additional landslides.
