SEATTLE (AP) — The Mariners will retire former designated hitter Edgar Martinez’s No. 11 as he continues to move closer to induction in the baseball Hall of Fame. Seattle President Kevin Mather said Tuesday that Martinez’s number will be officially retired Aug. 12 as part of a weekend celebration. Next to Ken Griffey Jr., no player in Mariners history has connected with Seattle like Martinez. He spent 18 seasons with the Mariners as a player and is regarded as one of the best right-handed hitters of his generation. He’s about to begin his second full season as the Mariners hitting coach.
TUKWILA, Wash. (AP) — Clint Dempsey was back on the practice field Tuesday when the defending MLS Cup champion Seattle Sounders opened training camp. General manager Garth Lagerwey said Dempsey has been cleared for full participation in training, though he will be monitored through the early stages of camp.
NEW YORK (AP) — Two-time defending champion Shannon Rowbury and Olympian Clayton Murphy will run in the Wanamaker Mile at next month’s Millrose Games. New York Road Runners said Tuesday they’ll compete Feb. 11 at The Armory in the 110th running of the event. Rowbury is the American record-holder in the 1,500 meters and 5,000. She won the 2015 Wanamaker Mile title in 4 minutes, 24.31 seconds, and defended her title last year in 4:24.39. The 21-year-old Murphy won the bronze medal in the 800 at the Rio Olympics. He finished fourth in the Fifth Avenue Mile in September.
MONTREAL (AP) — Alexander Radulov scored twice and the Montreal Canadiens beat Calgary 5-1 on Tuesday night, extending the Flames’ losing streak to four games. Andrew Shaw, Tomas Plekanec and Daniel Carr also scored for Montreal (29-13-7). Carey Price made 30 saves in the win and even had an assist.
