ST. LOUIS (AP) — One of the nation’s largest moving companies says South Dakota is first on its list of top moving destinations. Suburban St. Louis-based United Van Lines has tracked customer state-to-state migration for the past 40 years. For 2016, South Dakota was the state with the highest percentage of inbound moves. Oregon had been No. 1 the previous three years and dropped to third. Vermont was second.

GRESHAM, Ore. (AP) — Gresham police say a lengthy standoff has ended with a man who barricaded himself in an apartment. Police say the man was arrested Thursday morning and a baby that was inside the apartment is safe. Officers responded late Wednesday to a report of a domestic disturbance. The woman came out when police arrived, but the man stayed inside with their child.

CORVALLIS, Ore. (AP) — Corvallis police arrested a man accused of neglecting a dog that later had to be euthanized. Police said officers responding to a disturbance in late December found the dog unable to stand, and suffering from open and bleeding sores. The 29-year-old man allegedly told police he was aware the dog had health problems, but had not taken it to a vet in years

ALOHA, Ore. (AP) — Firefighters used a system of pulleys and ropes to rescue a horse that got stuck in the mud on a freezing day in Aloha, Oregon. Tualatin Valley Fire & Rescue says the powerful Clydesdale named Windsor was suffering from hypothermia, and lacked the strength to get out on his own. After pulling him from the mud, crews used heating equipment to get his temperature near normal. He was eventually able to stand and is expected to make a full recovery.
