T25-COLLEGE FOOTBALL POLL

AP Top 25: Big Ten has 4 in top 10 for 1st time since 1960

UNDATED (AP) — The Big Ten has four teams in the top 10 of The Associated Press college football poll during the regular season for the first time since 1960, and No. 24 Western Michigan is ranked for the first time in school history.

No. 8 Wisconsin and No. 10 Nebraska joined No. 2 Ohio State and No. 4 Michigan in the first 10 of the AP Top 25 released Monday. The poll release was delayed one day because two FBS games were postponed until Sunday due to Hurricane Matthew.

Alabama remains No. 1. The Crimson Tide received 56 first-place votes. Ohio State and No. 3 Clemson each received two first-place votes. Michigan had one first-place vote.

Washington was fifth as the top five went unchanged after all had decisive victories last weekend. Boise State also remains undefeated and moves up four spots in the poll, to 15th.

No. 5 Washington rolling halfway through season

SEATTLE (AP) — Before the season began, Washington coach Chris Petersen was emphatic that despite any early hype, his team’s place in the national landscape shouldn’t be judged until at least after the sixth game.

So, with six weeks of the season in the books, the Huskies remain undefeated and seemingly on a path for a spot in the College Football Playoff should they keep winning.

The past six weeks have vaulted Washington (6-0, 3-0 Pac-12) from a preseason conference contender to a legitimate part of the playoff discussion. If Washington’s 44-6 dismantling of Stanford didn’t prove the Huskies’ legitimacy, then the 70-21 beating placed on Oregon last Saturday certainly did.

The Huskies’ start has been so impressive that the fact they are bowl eligible is a complete afterthought just a year after Washington had to win its final two games to qualify for a bowl. It’s also created buzz about quarterback Jake Browning as a Heisman Trophy contender. Browning accounted for 8 total touchdowns in the win over Oregon to tie a Pac-12 single game record.

No. 21 Utah loses another RB, Shyne done for the season

SALT LAKE CITY (AP) — Utah starting running back Armand Shyne is done for the season after suffering an injury to his right leg during the Utes’ 36-23 win over Arizona on Saturday.

Shyne was promoted to starter last week and went down immediately after becoming the first Utes back to rush for 100 yards in a game this season. He finished with 101 yards and a touchdown on 19 carries.

Shyne will miss the spring session, also.

The sophomore was the fourth Utah running back to go down this season, and he wasn’t the only one Saturday. Junior Jordan Howard became No. 5 after making his debut at running back following Shyne’s injury. Coach Kyle Whittingham didn’t specify the injury, but Howard cannot play this week against Oregon State.

Baldwin says progress being made in talks with police

RENTON, Wash. (AP) — Seattle Seahawks wide receiver Doug Baldwin says he’s had substantive talks with members of law enforcement and Washington state Attorney General Bob Ferguson after Baldwin’s call for a review of training tactics used by police.

Baldwin first spoke out three weeks ago following police shootings in Charlotte, North Carolina, and Tulsa, Oklahoma. At that time, Baldwin called for all 50 state attorneys general to review law enforcement training policies.

Since then, Baldwin has had talks with law enforcement in the Seattle area in the effort to gather information that he hopes can change how police officers are trained.

Baldwin has become a focal point in the conversation regarding interactions with police. He appeared on two different national television shows last week during the Seahawks’ bye after first making his request last month. The Seattle Police Department confirmed to The Seattle Times last week that some of its personnel has met with Baldwin.
