PENDLETON, Ore. (AP) – A prison guard driving to work in Eastern
Oregon has been killed after stopping to help a man stranded by a
car crash, and authorities have arrested one suspect.
Twenty-two-year-old Joshua Charles Weeks of Multnomah County was
jailed by state police on one count of murder, and is set to be
arraigned today in the death of 42-year-old Buddy Ray Herron, a
guard at the Eastern Oregon Correctional Institution.

OREGON CITY, Ore. (AP) – The Clackamas County sheriff’s office
wants to hear from anyone who was on a bicycle path late
Thanksgiving night and may have information about the killing of a
50-year-old woman. The body of Dana Crippen was found Friday on the
path under Johnson Creek Boulevard west of Interstate 205, in the
Happy Valley area north of Oregon City. The Oregonian says she
recently took part in the Occupy Portland encampment.

EUGENE, Ore. (AP) – Now that Richard Lariviere (la-RIV’-ee-AIR’)
has been formally fired as president of the University of Oregon,
the Board of Higher Education is looking to mend fences in Eugene.
Many in the university community were angered by the ouster of the
popular leader. Chancellor George Pernsteiner and a board member
will be in Eugene today to meet with students, faculty and others
as officials try to chart a way forward for the UO.

PORTLAND, Ore. (AP) – The Independent Party of Oregon has
nominated Democrat Suzanne Bonamici in the special election to
replace former U.S. Rep. David Wu. Bonamici was named the nominee
last night after the party’s two-week online primary wrapped up.
Bonamici won with 56 votes to 31 for Republican Rob Cornilles.
Bonamici will be listed on the Jan. 31 ballot as the nominee of
both the Democratic and Independent parties.
