Andrus has HR, 3 doubles to pace Rangers past Mariners 10-7
SEATTLE (AP) — Elvis Andrus had a homer and three doubles, Jonathan Lucroy hit a two-run homer and the Texas Rangers held off the slumping Seattle Mariners 10-7 on Tuesday night.
Texas, which leads the AL West by 8 ½ games, had a season-high seven doubles among its 15 hits and won for the eighth time in 10 games.
Martin Perez (10-10) allowed four runs — two earned — and seven hits in six innings to win for the third time in his last 13 starts. Sam Dyson pitched the ninth for his 32nd save.
James Paxton (4-6) allowed six runs — four earned — and nine hits, throwing 103 pitches in 4 1/3 innings.
The Rangers snapped a 4-4 tie with three runs in the fifth. Lucroy chased Paxton with his ninth homer since joining the Rangers — he had 13 with Milwaukee prior to the Aug. 1 trade. Drew Storen relieved and gave up doubles to Andrus and pinch-hitter Mitch Moreland.
TRAINING ROOM:
Mariners: RHP Tom Wilhelmsen, eligible to come off the 15-day DL (low back spasms), is on track to throw a simulated game on Thursday after an incident-free bullpen on Tuesday.
RANGERS ROSTER MOVES
Along with Scheppers, the Rangers recalled INF Joey Gallo and OF Jared Hoying from Triple-A Round Rock. Gallo and Hoying each were previously called up by Texas twice this season. Gallo hit .240 with 25 homers and 66 RBIs at Round Rock, while Hoying batted .269 with 16 homers, 66 RBIs and 18 stolen bases.
MARINERS ROSTER MOVES
Veteran OF Norichika Aoki was recalled Tuesday after a short stint at Triple-A Tacoma. The left-handed hitting Aoki, batting .265 in 98 games with Seattle, was sent down because the Mariners were set to face several left-handers and Aoki would have received little playing time during that stretch. Aoki hit .226 (7 for 31) in his most recent eight games at Tacoma.
UP NEXT:
Mariners: LHP Ariel Miranda (2-1, 5.76 ERA) makes his sixth start since being acquired from Baltimore on July 31 in the trade for Wade Miley. Miranda was tagged for four runs in the first in his last start against the Angels, but followed with five scoreless innings for the victory when the Mariners rallied.

Crimson Tide roll on
UNDATED (AP) — Alabama strengthened its hold on the No. 1 spot in the first regular season Associated Press college football poll.
The top-ranked Crimson Tide picked up 21 more first place votes this week after stunning Southern Cal 52-6 in the season opener Saturday.
That gives Alabama 54 total first place votes.
Clemson stays at No. 2, while Florida State moved up a spot to third. Ohio State and Michigan round out the top five.
Washington moved up six spots to 8th while Oregon stayed at No. 24.

Ducks freshman linebacker Troy Dye gets off to fast start
EUGENE, Ore. (AP) — Troy Dye has appeared in just one college game but already he’s grabbing attention with his play — so much so that he was named Pac-12 defensive player of the week.
Even the freshman linebacker was kind of surprised by his opening line in Oregon’s 53-28 season-opening victory over UC Davis: 11 tackles, including seven solo, 4.5 for loss and a sack. He also blocked a field goal attempt. His overall tackles led the team, and his tackles for loss led the nation.
It was the most for an Oregon freshman since Walter Thurmond III had 14 tackles in 2006.
Dye says he just went out and tried to play fast and physical like the Ducks’ coaches told him to do and had fun.
He’ll no doubt look to build on his debut on Saturday night when the 24th-ranked Ducks host Virginia. The Cavaliers, under new coach Bronco Mendenhall, fell to Richmond 37-20 in their opener.

Teammate Mario Williams’ rehabilitation will take longer; he’s trying to repair a reputation for inconsistent effort.
The two Miami Dolphins defensive ends, both four-time Pro Bowlers, will play pivotal roles in Sunday’s opener at Seattle. But the real opponent is Father Time, and the pair of thirtysomethings are racing the clock, anxious to show they can still reach the quarterback before he gets rid of the ball.

Ellis: Solo suspension stemmed from ‘sum total of actions’
UNDATED (AP) — U.S. women’s national team coach Jill Ellis is emphatic that Hope Solo’s suspension stems from a ‘sum total of actions’ and not just comments the goalkeeper made about Sweden during the Olympics.
Solo was suspended for six months and her contract with U.S. Soccer was terminated following the team’s disappointing exit from the Rio Games.
Sweden eliminated the United States on penalty kicks after a 1-1 draw in the quarterfinals. Afterward, Solo called the Swedes a “bunch of cowards” for their defensive style of play.
Ellis discussed the suspension for the first time in a Q & A interview published on U.S. Soccer’s website.
Solo won’t be eligible for selection to the national team again until February.
