Minnesota scored twice in the fourth quarter and the Golden Gophers held off the Beavers last night, 30-23 in the season opener for both teams.

The Oregon State offense struggled at times, despite the ejection of three Minnesota defensive players for three separate personal fouls.  Darrell Garretson threw for 228 yards and three touchdowns, but the junior transfer lost two fumbles in the first half.  The Beavers have next week off and return to the field September 17th at home against Idaho State.

Prep Volleyball

Viking Volleyball came away from their opening night on the court with a split.  Philomath shut down the Vikings 1-3 in the opening non-league match last night.  The Vikings rebounded for a 3-1 win over the Junction City Tigers in the nightcap.

Sailor volleyball fell to the Lowell Devils 0-3 yesterday afternoon in a Mountain West League matchup in Lowell.

The Sailors will be in Reedsport for tournament play tomorrow.
