U.S. men claim gold in 96-66 win over Serbia

RIO DE JANEIRO (AP) — The U.S. Olympic men’s basketball team won its third straight gold medal and did it easily, beating Serbia 96-66.

With the win, the Americans claim the final medal of the Rio Games.

After a few close calls earlier in the tournament, this was no contest. Kevin Durant scored 30 points and helped the U.S. jump out to a huge lead by halftime.

It was the final game for Mike Krzyzewski, who took the Americans back to the top and leaves with them there after becoming the first coach to win three Olympic gold medals.

Carmelo Anthony also picked up his third gold to go with a bronze, becoming the most decorated male in Olympic basketball history.

Serbia lost only 94-91 to the U.S. during pool play but was barely in the game again after a close first quarter.

SEAHAWKS-POPE

UDFA RB Pope turning heads with Seahawks

RENTON, Wash. (AP) — Despite urging from family members to seek a job in the real word, Troymaine Pope continued to hold out hope for an NFL opportunity.

A tryout with the Kansas City Chiefs in May didn’t yield a contract offer. Instead, the former Jacksonville State running back returned home to Anniston, Alabama, far from the practice fields of an NFL team. Finally, he gave in and interviewed to work at a car factory.

Then his phone rang.

With injuries mounting early in training camp, the Seattle Seahawks needed help at running back. They gave Pope the opportunity he had been holding out hope for.

“They called me and I just like, oh man, starting broke down crying like it’s a blessing. It was God’s plan,” Pope said.

Pope is trying to make his stay with Seattle a long one. He has been one of the unexpected stars during Seattle’s first two preseason games. Pope rushed for 86 yards and a touchdown on just 10 carries against the Minnesota Vikings on Thursday night. He also scored the winning two-point conversion against the Chiefs in the Seahawks’ preseason opener.

BREWERS-MARINERS

Broxton, Carter homers rally Brewers past Mariners in 9th

SEATTLE (AP) — Keon Broxton and Chris Carter homered and Scooter Gennett had an RBI single during a four-run ninth inning, lifting the Milwaukee Brewers over the Seattle Mariners 7-6 on Sunday to end a six-game losing streak.

The Brewers trailed 6-3 after eight innings but rallied against Tom Wilhelmsen (2-4). Broxton hit his second solo homer of the game and Carter followed with a two-run shot, his 29th, to tie it.

After Domingo Santana singled, Vidal Nuno relieved Wilhelmsen and allowed a single to Manny Pina. Gennett then blooped a single into left-center that scored Santana from second.

Tyler Thornburg (5-4) pitched the final two innings for the win.

Milwaukee trailed 6-1 after four innings. Ryan Braun had a two-run double in the sixth off rookie Ariel Miranda, making his third career start since being acquired from Baltimore for Wade Miley on July 31st.

MLS-TIMBERS-SOUNDERS

Dempsey scores twice, Sounders beat Timbers 3-1

SEATTLE (AP) — Clint Dempsey scored twice and Cristian Roldan added a goal — all in the second half — in the Seattle Sounders’ 3-1 victory over the Portland Timbers on Sunday night.

In front of 53,302 fans at CenturyLink Field, the Sounders (9-12-3) won their third straight game and extended their unbeaten streak to four (3-0-1). They climbed within two points of the Timbers (8-10-8) for the last playoff spot in the Western Conference.

Portland, which got a goal from Fanendo Adi in second-half stoppage time, has lost four of its last five games and remains winless on the road at 0-7-6.

Dempsey put Seattle on the board in the 61st minute when he converted a penalty kick past goalkeeper Jake Gleeson.

In in the 80th minute, Roldan sent a through ball toward the Portland penalty area. Demspey caught up with it, took two dribbles, and fired it into the back right corner from just inside the restraining arc.

Dempsey has eight goals this season.

Roldan headed in a shot from inside the 6-yard box to make it 3-0 in the 83rd. It was his third of the year.
