D.J. Wilson hit an RBI double in the seventh inning to help the Emeralds ice their 14th straight win… a one-run shutout victory over the Boise Hawks in Eugene.

Wilson’s second hit of the evening scored Trent Giambrone for the winning margin.  The two teams wind up the three-game series this evening at PK Park.  The Everett Aqua Sox come to town tomorrow for the start of a five-game series.

Siuslaw Hall of Fame induction

The Siuslaw Athletic Hall of Fame ceremony will induct the sixth overall class this evening during a dinner at Three Rivers Casino and Resort.  Florence resident Harold McClellan… from the class of 1957… is one of eight individuals being recognized.  He was a three-sport athlete:  halfback on a Viking football team that went to the playoffs; he was the leading scorer on the basketball team; and qualified for the state meet in both the 100 and 220 yard dashes.

Dinner is $20, you can pay at the door… they open at five p.m.

2016 Inductees:

Harold McClellan (1958) Harold was an all-around athlete, competing in three sports for Siuslaw.  As a Halfback on the Viking squad his senior year, he scored two touchdowns, one on a 50-yard run, the other on a carry of 44 yards, in a playoff win against undefeated Toledo.  On the basketball court, he led scoring for the Vikings in the 57-58 season, averaging 16+ points per game.  He qualified for the state track and field meet both his Jr. and Sr. years in the 100 yard and 220 yard dashes.  Harold was a team captain for football and basketball his Sr. year as well.

Les Conley (1965) –    Is most known for his achievements in Track and Field at Siuslaw.  We won back to back district championships in 1964 and 65 in the 100 yard dash and 180 yard low hurdles.  He won the state championship in the 100 yards his Jr. year, and followed it with a tie for first the following year with a state meet record of 10 seconds flat (hand timed).  He was second at state in the 180 hurdles in ’64, and wound up in a three-way tie for third the following year.  Conley was also an accomplished running back for the Viking football team.  Under coach Erv Garrison in his final year, Conley had an 83-yard touchdown run against Mapleton.

Toni (Winther) Stonelake (1965) – Former coach Liz McCain said Toni was one reason why McCain pushed to form a girls’ track and field team in 1964.  Even without the benefit of official OSAA sanction, the team that year, including Winther, competed in the state finals.  Winther ran in the 100 yd, 220 yd, and one leg of the 440 relay.  She also did the long jump.  Winther made her return to the state meet again in several events during her Sr. year.

She’s the second member of the family to be inducted into the Hall of Fame.  Her daughter, Kelli (Stonelake) Sorenson went into the hall in 2011.

Dick Pickett (1967) – Was a solid competitor all four years at Siuslaw on the wrestling mats.  He made two trips to the state championships at Oregon State University in Corvallis, coming away with a fifth place finish his Jr. year at 130 pounds.  The following year he moved up to 141 pounds and claimed the district championship at that weight.  The following week, at the State Meet, he breezed through the bracket, not giving up a point until the championship match where he won the title on a 6-1 decision.

Wayne Jackson (1974) – Jackson was named All Coast League on the baseball diamond as a freshman with a .400+ batting average.  He also lettered three years on the boys’ golf team; and brought home a letter his senior year on the football field.  In the fall of 1973 Jackson was named to the first team – All State as a running back, despite a 5-4 team finish and no post-season play.  He has a career “all purpose” yardage of 2,335 and had a 143 yard per rushing game average as a senior.  In his final game against Reedsport, Jackson carried the ball for 266 yards and scored six touchdowns; one on a blocked punt return and two more on interceptions. His 120 points scored in 1973 put him number 9 on the all-time single season scoring list at Siuslaw.  He was recognized by Coast League coaches as an all-league halfback and linebacker in the 1972 season.

Danielle (Wilson) Glenzel (1987) —  Danielle was a three-sport, four year competitor at Siuslaw, lettering 4 times in Track, 3 times each in volleyball and basketball. She received all-league honors in volleyball and basketball her Jr. year; repeating that accomplishment again the next year.  She was also named the league’s most valuable player on the volleyball court her Sr. season when the Vikings went through the regular season undefeated and ended with a 4th place trophy at the state tourney. On the track, Wilson  had two second place finishes at State in the Discus, and a 5th place finish in the shot.  During her tenure at Siuslaw, she competed on three State Championship Track and Field teams, and on one with a 4th place finish.

Brent Sanford (1992) —  Brent has several entries in the all time Siuslaw football stat book.  He’s number one on the list for most yards rushing in a single game, 315 in 1990 against Gold Beach.  He currently ranks number 2 on the all time lost for career rushing yardage, 3032 yards in three years. His single season effort as a Sr., 1299 yard, places him at #10 overall.    Sanford is 4th on the all-time scoring list with 222 points.  96 of those points came in the 1991 season, placing num 8th overall on that list.

Doug Kelley (1993) –  Kelley was an integral part of the Viking Boys’ Golf team during his Jr. and Sr. seasons.  In ’92, as a Jr., Kelley played in his first State Tournament, this one at McNary Golf Course in Salem, where he shot a 152 and finished 5th individually.  The following year, he was a consistent medalist during the season and capped the regular season three strokes off the leader to finish in a tie for 2nd place individual finish at District.  Once again, the State Meet was at McNary.  Kelley fired back-to-back 72s to tie with Santiam Christian’s Brian Gilder for the co-championship, helping the Vikings to their first State Golf title.

1996 Boys Cross Country Team – Only the second state championship Cross Country team at Siuslaw since 1966.  The team was coached by first-year Chris Johnson and didn’t place a single runner in the top ten at the state meet.  But, they  beat out heavily favored teams from St. Helens  and Phoenix.  They did it with an outstanding team performance, with four of the runners scoring fewer than 30 points each; the Vikings outpaced Glide with 133 points to their 141.

1997 Boys Track and Field Team – Coached by Gary Giddens, the ’97 crew entered the state meet with athletes in 13 events.  The four-time Far West League Champions came away with 52 points, tying  La Salle.  The relay performances were highlights of the meet for Siuslaw with the 4×400 team of Jon Jensen, Matt Pearson, Aaron Long and David Richmond blistering the track for the win in 3:24.25, a Siuslaw record to this day.  The 4×100 team of Mike Evenson, Jensen, Richmond and Pearson finished in 2nd.  The team had one individual 2nd place; David Richmond in the 400 m at 49.08 and two 3rds, Stewart Myrick in the Javelin with a toss of 187’ 10”; and Aaron Long in the 1500 m in 4:03.36.  Richmond added a 4th place finish in the 200 m; Tony Reindl scored points with his 7th place finish in the shot put and Adam Hunt was 8th in the discus.
