ALL-STAR GAME

Hosmer, Perez lift AL to 4-2 All-Star win, Series home field

SAN DIEGO (AP) — Eric Hosmer and Salvador Perez made sure the Kansas City Royals will start at home, sweet, home if they get a chance to defend their World Series title.

The Royals duo homered off former Kansas City teammate Johnny Cueto during a six-pitch span in the second inning, Hosmer added an RBI single and the American League beat the Nationals 4-2 Tuesday night for their fourth straight win in the All-Star game. Seattle Mariners star Robinson Cano walked in his lone at-bat of the contest.

Kris Bryant of the Cubs led the parade of sparkling young talent with a first-inning home run. Dellin Betances flashed his 100 mph heat and Astros reliever Will Harris came on to throw a called third strike past Cardinals rookie Aledmys Diaz on a 3-2 pitch on the outside corner with the bases loaded to end the eighth.

The top-ranked U.S. team, which has won silver medals at the past two Olympics, opens the tournament on Aug. 6 against Puerto Rico. Brazil is the two-time defending Olympic champion.

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. (AP) — Megan Rapinoe, who is coming off December knee surgery, has been named to the national team roster for the Rio Games along with New Jersey’s Carli Lloyd, who has scored in the gold-medal winning final for the United States in the last two Olympics.

Lloyd, who also scored three goals in 16 minutes to lead the United States to victory over Japan in the final at last summer’s Women’s World Cup, joins fellow three-time Olympians midfielder Tobin Heath and goalkeeper Hope Solo on the roster announced Tuesday.

The United States has won the last three Olympic gold medals. The team opens the tournament in Brazil against New Zealand on Aug. 3 at Mineirao Stadium in Belo Horizonte.

HIGH SCHOOL-PITCHING LIMITS

US high school federation calls for pitch limits in 2017

RICHMOND, Va. (AP) — The National Federation of State High School Associations has told its members to adopt a rule regulating the number of pitches a high school pitcher can throw in a game.

The federation did not proscribe a specific number. NFHS director of sports and student services Elliot Hopkins said Tuesday it simply wants local associations legislate a pitch count by next season.

The rule will go into effect in the spring of 2017.

Every state plus the District of Columbia is a federation member, Hopkins said, with governance over the largest, typically public association. Each state except Michigan has its own sports medicine advisory committee that will likely be involved in settling on a specific number.
