6th annual Power of Florence coming July 16th
The third Saturday in Florence has been set aside for “doing good deeds” each year for the past five years. Power of Florence organizer Kaylee Graham says July 16th will be no different.
Kaylee Graham – “We have service projects like weeding or scotch broom removal; we’ve had people clean up the school. There’s also been all sorts of events in the Grocery Outlet parking lot. Every year there’s a Beavers versus Ducks food collecting contest. And, uh, there’s all the Humane Society events there like the hamburger and hot dog feed, the kitten adoption, we just have a wide variety of things.”
The 16-year old high school junior started the program when she was in middle school. The idea, she said, was for everyone to pitch in on the same day and do something that would benefit someone else. This year the list of events is at well over two-dozen… and growing. It will start again with the Methodist Church pancake feed followed by a “Power Walk” that morning, then people will spread through the community.

Rhody repairs delayed a week
Resurfacing of a portion of Rhododendron Drive in Florence that had been scheduled for earlier this week has been postponed.
City of Florence spokesperson Megan Messmer (MEZZ-murr) said Ray Wells Incorporated will be doing a “grind-inlay” over about a half-mile long stretch on Rhododendron just north of the intersection with 35th Street one week from today on the 14th.
Messmer said they’ll remove two inches of the old asphalt and repave with two inches of new.
It’s part of the multi-phase gravity sewer project being installed in the area. She said the “chip-seal” done last year in the same area was a temporary fix.
Non-smokers get up to 40% of floor space at TRC
More non-smoking options will be available for gamblers and gamers beginning later this month at Three Rivers Casino.
July 29th the casino will open an expanded non-smoking section that will be nearly 12-thousand square feet… roughly eight times the size of the current non-smoking area. There will also be a new private Keno and poker lounge.
Chief Operating Officer Mike Rose said the expansion came at the request of visitors who were asking for more non-smoking options.
There will still be plenty of space for those who wish to light up while playing the games… there will be more than 14-thousand square feet that remains designated for smoking.
Three Rivers Casino and resort opened as a casino only facility in 2004. Three years later the Confederated Tribes of the Coos, Lower Umpqua and Siuslaw Indians opened an entirely new facility that included three restaurants, a conference facility, and a three-story hotel.
Southern Oregon gas prices highest in the state
The average cash price for a gallon of regular gas dipped by about a penny in Florence in the past week. At $2.41 a gallon, it’s 14 cents less than the statewide average of $2.55 as measured by Triple-A. Marie Dodds with Triple-A reports that the Oregon Average price increased by two cents a gallon in the past week.
Meanwhile, the national average price went down three cents to $2.26.
Dodds said the average posted price in the Eugene Springfield area is $2.58 a gallon; in Portland it’s $2.52; and in Medford the average price is $2.69 a gallon.
