Smith grand slam leads M’s over O’s 9-4 for 4-game sweep

SEATTLE (AP) — Seth Smith hit his first career grand slam, homering for the fourth straight game and leading the Seattle Mariners over the Baltimore Orioles 9-4 Sunday for a four-game sweep.

Seattle had 31 runs and 47 hits, including 23 for extra bases, in sweeping the AL East leaders.

Hisashi Iwakuma (8-6) allowed four runs and 10 hits in six-plus innings.

Ubaldo Jimenez (5-8) gave up six runs and six hits in 4 1/3 innings.

With the game scoreless in the third, Chris Iannetta walked leading off, Ketel Marte blooped a single and Leonys Martin reached when he bunted, Jimenez picked up the ball and looked to throw to third, only to find Manny Machado and charged in and the base was uncovered. Smith’s 10th homer put the Mariners ahead 4-0.

ORIOLES-MIRANDA

Orioles call up left-hander Ariel Miranda

SEATTLE (AP) — Baltimore selected the contract of left-handed reliever Ariel Miranda from Triple-A Norfolk and optioned right-handed pitcher Tyler Wilson to Norfolk.

To clear room on the 40-man roster, the Orioles moved left-handed pitcher Brian Duensing to the 60-day disabled list.

Miranda was to provide a needed arm after short starts from Wilson and Chris Tillman. Wilson allowed eight runs and nine hits Saturday, failing to get an out in the fourth inning.

Miranda did not allow a run in his last 19 innings in three starts for Norfolk.

The Orioles may not fill Wilson’s spot in the starting rotation until after the All-Star break. With an off-day Thursday, the rotation can remain on normal rest until the break.

Duensing was placed on the disabled list on June 20 with left elbow inflammation and is eligible to return Aug. 19.

LPGA-PORTLAND CLASSIC

Henderson repeats as winner of Portland Classic

PORTLAND, Ore. (AP) — Defending champion Brooke Henderson survived some tense moments on the back nine on the way to a four-stroke victory Sunday at the LPGA Cambia Portland Classic.

The second-ranked Henderson shot a 14-under 274 after a final round 71 at Columbia Edgewater Country Club, pulling away from American Stacy Lewis, who was 10-under after a 69.

Henderson became the first back-to-back winner at Portland since Annika Sorenstam won consecutive tournaments in 2002 and 2003. The 18-year-old is the first wire-to-wire winner at Portland since the tournament went to a 72-hole event in 2013.

Henderson is the tour’s second wire-to-wire winner this year, joining Ha Na Jang, who won the Coates Championship in February.

It was Henderson’s third career win, all coming in the Northwest. Aside from her two Portland victories, Henderson won the Women’s PGA Championship at Sahalee in Sammamish, Washington, three weeks ago.

ATH-US TRACK TRIALS

Rio trip! Felix, Gatlin, Merritt book trips to Olympics

EUGENE, Ore. (AP) — Justin Gatlin is heading to the Rio Olympics, after posting the year’s best time of 9.8 seconds in the 100 meters to win the U.S. Olympic Trials.

He’ll have some familiar company.

Allyson Felix fought through her injured right ankle to secure her spot in the 400 meters (49.68 seconds), and keep alive her hopes of a 200-400 double.

LaShawn Merritt, the 2008 gold medalist at 400 meters, also won (43.97) and said he’ll try to qualify in the 200, as well.

And defending Olympic champion Ashton Eaton was a runaway winner in the decathlon. His 8,750 points were one more than the personal best of anyone else who can qualify in the Olympic field.

Also making it: High jumper Vashti Cunningham, the daughter of former NFL quarterback Randall Cunningham.
