EUGENE, Ore. (AP) – University of Oregon President Richard
Lariviere (la-riv-ee-air) says the state Board of Higher Education
will not renew his contract at the end of June. He sent an email to
faculty and students last night saying he was told Monday he could
resign or accept termination. KATU reports a rift between Lariviere
and the board opened during the last legislative session when he
proposed the university form its own governing board and become
more financially independent.
EUGENE, Ore. (AP) – Two homeless men have been convicted of
third-degree assault for a fight with a Glenwood man and sentenced
in Lane County Circuit Court. The Register-Guard reports John
Chartrand was sentenced to a year in jail and Carl Pyritz got two
years in prison. Pyritz got the longer term because of his criminal
record. Their lawyer argued the beating in August was in
self-defense after Chartrand was stabbed.
PORTLAND, Ore. (AP) – Police say a woman has been struck by a
car and killed as she attempted to cross a street in Portland last
night, outside of a crosswalk. A witness attempted CPR but the
woman died at the scene of extensive injuries. Police say the
driver remained at the scene and cooperated with investigators.
There was no indication the driver was speeding or under the
influence.
PORTLAND, Ore. (AP) – The first Black Friday customer lined up
in front of the Gresham Best Buy on Monday – four days early. Mike
O’Brien tells The Oregonian he pitched his tent to claim the first
spot to make sure he’ll receive tickets for a limited number of
deeply discounted items. He’s shopping for a 42-inch TV, laptop and
desktop computers. The 43-year-old says his wife made him do it.
