Valeri’s 2 penalty kicks give Timbers 3-2 win over Dynamo

PORTLAND, Ore. (AP) — Diego Valeri scored on a pair of late penalty kicks in the Portland Timbers’ 3-2 comeback victory over the Houston Dynamo Sunday.

The Timbers (6-6-5) are undefeated in six games overall and five MLS matches, and the win pushed them above the red line into fifth place in the Western Conference.

Valeri’s penalty kicks came in the 82nd minute and stoppage time, giving him seven goals on the season. Lucas Melano also scored for Portland.

Andrew Wenger and Will Bruin scored within a span of two minutes in the first half for the Dynamo (3-8-5), who sit at the bottom of the conference.

Houston had played to three consecutive draws since the departure of Owen Coyle, who has become manager of the Blackburn Rovers in Lancashire, England. Assistant Wade Barrett was promoted to interim head coach.

Thorns undefeated in 11 matches after 2-1 win over Pride

ORLANDO, Fla. (AP) — Lindsey Horan broke a tie in the 90th minute and the Portland Thorns remained undefeated in the first 11 matches of the season with a 2-1 victory over the Orlando Pride Sunday.

Dagny Brynjarsdottir also scored for the Thorns, who remained atop the National Women’s Soccer League standings at 6-0-5 in the last match before the U.S. women’s national team members depart for a training camp.

Jasmyne Spencer scored her second goal in two games for Orlando (5-6-0), which saw its undefeated streak at Camping World Stadium snapped.

Portland’s undefenated streak is the second-longest in NWSL history, behind the Seattle Reign’s 16-game streak to open the 2014 season.

In other NWSL matches this weekend, the Western New York Flash beat the Boston Breakers 7-1, Sky Blue edged the Washington Spirit 2-1, and The Reign and FC Kansas City played to a scoreless draw.

JAVELIN INJURY

Oregon teen pierced in eye by javelin in fair condition

PORTLAND, Ore. (AP) — The parents of an Oregon high school champion pole vaulter pierced in the eye by a javelin say their son’s vision is blurry but he can see out of the eye.

Barry and Carrie Kennedy in a statement released Sunday through Oregon Health and Science University in Portland say 18-year-old Parker Kennedy is in fair condition.

The parents say his neurological status is good and he’s talking, moving and showing signs of progress.

Parker Kennedy was injured Friday night after he tripped during a Portland track meet.

A fire department spokeswoman says the javelin was removed by someone before firefighters arrived.

Kennedy is a graduate of Hood River Valley High School and won the 5A pole vault at the state championship in the spring.
