Moya homers twice, Tigers beat Seattle 5-1
DETROIT (AP) — Steven Moya homered twice, and the Detroit Tigers withstood a shaky fifth inning from right-hander Michael Fulmer to beat the Seattle Mariners 5-1 Wednesday night.
Miguel Cabrera also went deep for Detroit, and reliever Kyle Ryan (2-2) helped the Tigers stay comfortably ahead after Fulmer went through some control problems in the fifth. Ryan came on with one out in that inning and the bases loaded, with Detroit up 4-1. He retired all five hitters he faced, striking out three.
Hisashi Iwakuma (6-6) allowed five runs and 11 hits in 4 2/3 innings. The Mariners have lost five straight.
The 24-year-old Moya came into the game with one career homer, but he hit a solo shot to right in the fourth and another to left the following inning.
MARINERS MOVES
Seattle acquires LeBlanc, signs Wilhelmsen to help pitching
DETROIT (AP) — The Seattle Mariners are trying to bolster their pitching by signing former right-handed reliever Tom Wilhelmsen and acquiring left-hander Wade LeBlanc in a trade with Toronto.
Seattle made the moves on Wednesday. Wilhelmsen was signed to a one-year deal after he declined an outright assignment by Texas earlier this month and was granted free agency. Wilhelmsen was a solid reliever with Seattle from 2011 to 2015 before being traded to the Rangers last offseason. Wilhelmsen struggled in Texas with a 2-3 record and 10.55 ERA in 21 appearances.
To clear a roster spot for Wilhelmsen, Seattle transferred left-hander Charlie Furbush to the 60-day disabled list and optioned Jonathan Aro to Triple-A Tacoma.
LeBlanc was acquired in exchange for cash or a player to be named later and likely will be Seattle’s starter on Friday. LeBlanc was 7-2 with a 1.71 ERA in 14 starts with Triple-A Buffalo. He last pitched in the majors in 2014 with the Yankees and Angels.
RED STARS-THORNS
Sinclair, Nadim score and the Thorns beat the Red Stars 2-0
PORTLAND, Ore. (AP) — Christine Sinclair scored in the sixth minute to give Portland the lead and the Thorns went on to beat the Chicago Red Stars 2-0 Wednesday night.
The Thorns (5-0-5) are the lone remaining undefeated team in the National Women’s Soccer League through the team’s first 10 games. The Seattle Reign started the 2014 season out with 16 straight wins.
Amandine Henry of France made her first start for the Thorns and made an impact early, heading a corner kick toward the goal that was popped in by teammate Nadia Nadim in the 25th minute for a 2-0 lead.
The Thorns jumped ahead of the Red Stars (5-2-3) at the top of the NWSL standings.
Attendance for the match at Providence Park was announced at 16,931.
CHILE-COLOMBIA
Chile beats Colombia 2-0 to return to Copa America final
CHICAGO (AP) — Charles Aranguiz and Jose Pedro Feunzalida scored in the first half and defending champion Chile returned to the Copa America championship with a soggy 2-0 victory over Colombia Wednesday night.
Led by Claudio Bravo’s stellar effort in goal, Chile earned its fourth straight win since a 2-1 loss to top-ranked Argentina in their Group D opener. Next up is a rematch with La Albiceleste in the final Sunday night in New Jersey.
Chile also faced Lionel Messi and Argentina in last year’s championship, with La Roja winning 4-1 in a penalty shootout after a 0-0 extra-time draw.
James Rodriguez and Colombia got off to a slow start and their push for a comeback was hampered by a strong line of thunderstorms that delayed the start of the second half by more than two hours, drenching the playing surface and making it difficult to stay on your feet at Soldier Field, home of the NFL’s Chicago Bears.
Colombia, which will face Clint Dempsey and the United States in the third-place game Saturday night in Arizona, also had to play with 10 men after Carlos Sanchez received his second yellow card in the 57th minute.
