MARINERS-RED SOX

Price goes 8 sharp in Boston’s 2-1 win over Seattle

BOSTON (AP) — David Price snapped a personal three-game losing streak by pitching eight sharp innings, Mookie Betts hit a go-ahead homer and the Boston Red Sox beat the Seattle Mariners 2-1 Sunday.

Betts also had two singles for Boston, which won its second straight after losing four of five.

Franklin Gutierrez hit a solo homer for the Mariners. He sparked their series-opening victory with two homers and six RBIs.

Price (8-4) gave up one run on eight hits, striking out seven without issuing a walk. He fanned his final two batters before Craig Kimbrel struck out the side in the ninth for his 16th save.

Price was rarely in trouble, but his teammates had difficulty scoring for him again. In his previous three starts, they had just five total runs.

The lefty got just enough support when Betts led off the seventh by hitting a fastball from Edwin Diaz (0-1) into the Green Monster seats.

LYNX-STORM

Moore, Fowles help Lynx beat Storm, extend record streak

SEATTLE (AP) — Maya Moore had 18 points, seven rebounds and eight assists to help the Minnesota Lynx beat the Seattle Storm 96-84 Sunday night and extend their WNBA record for consecutive wins to open a season.

Sylvia Fowles had 16 points and Natasha Howard added a season-high 16 points also, on 7-of-7 shooting, for the Lynx (12-0), whose reserves outscored those of the Storm 38-10.

Minnesota will face the unbeaten Sparks on Tuesday in Los Angeles.

Sue Bird hit back-to-back 3-pointers and then Alysha Clark converted a three-point play during a 9-2 spurt by Seattle that tied it early in the third quarter, but Minnesota scored nine straight to start a 29-8 run over the 10-plus minutes and led by double figures the rest of the way.

Seattle (4-9) made 10 of its first 13 field-goal attempts to open up a 22-12 lead before the Lynx caught fire. Minnesota, ranked No. 1 in the AP WNBA power poll, made 17 of its next 18 shots to take a 44-34 lead with 4:20 left in the half and never trailed again.

Breanna Stewart had 21 points and nine rebounds for the seventh-ranked Storm, which shot 35.6 percent (16 of 45) after the first quarter. Jewell Loyd added 16 points with seven assists and Sue Bird scored 14.

MLS-SOUNDERS-RED BULLS

Grella, Red Bulls beat Sounders 2-0, win 4th in a row

HARRISON, N.J. (AP) — Mike Grella scored twice and the New York Red Bulls beat the Seattle Sounders 2-0 on Sunday night for their fourth straight victory.

Grella opened the scoring in the 18th minute. After Sacha Kljestan blasted a shot from the corner of the box off the far post, Grella tapped the rebound with the inside of his left foot into the net.

After Loyd Sam’s pass deflected off defender Brad Evans, Grella chipped in from the top of the box in the 59th.

The Red Bulls (7-7-1) have outscored their opponents 13-0 during their winning streak and are 5-1-1 in their last seven matches. They haven’t allowed a goal since the 43rd minute of a 2-0 loss to D.C. United on May 13 — a stretch of more than 400 minutes.

Seattle (5-8-1), which had five more shots (16) than the Red Bulls, has lost four of its last five.

US APPEALS DENIED-COPA AMERICA

Appeals dismissed, Jones and Wood to miss Copa semifinal

HOUSTON (AP) — The U.S. Soccer Federation’s appeals of a red card given to midfielder Jermaine Jones and a yellow card assessed to forward Bobby Wood have been dismissed.

The decision Sunday will leave the U.S. without both players Tuesday night for the Copa America semifinal against Argentina in Houston.

Jones was given the red card Thursday night in the quarterfinals by Colombian referee Wilmar Roldan during a 52nd-minute confrontation that also saw Ecuador winger Antonio Valencia sent off after a second yellow card for a harsh tackle on Alejandro Bedoya. U.S. players immediately rushed to the scrum after Valencia’s tackle, and Jones raised an arm at Michael Arroyo.

U.S. team spokesman Michael Kammarman said the Jones appeal was based on Law 12 of the revised Laws of the Game.

Wood, already carrying a yellow card coming in, was given another in the 53rd minute. The USSF said it should not have been assessed because the ball was dead, claiming that because Jones remained on the field, the restart should not have taken place. The USSF also said the restart took place at the spot of the red card, not of Woods’ foul.

SPORTS CONCUSSIONS-KIDS

Study: Nearly 2 million concussions in kids’ sports, play yearly

CHICAGO (AP) — Children and teens in the U.S. suffer nearly 2 million concussions for sports and other play each year, with a new study finding many get no treatment.

The estimate, published in the journal Pediatrics on Monday, is based on 2013 data from emergency-room visits, hospitalizations, doctor-office visits, concussion reports made to high school athletic trainers, and information from previous concussion studies.

The study was led by pediatrician Dr. Mersine Bryan of Seattle Children’s Hospital and involved kids age 18 and younger. Researchers say their figures are imprecise but they estimate half a million or more kids sought treatment from an athletic trainer or got no treatment at all.

The federal Centers for Disease Control and Prevention plans to create a system to track concussion rates and trends in children and adults.
