MARINERS-PADRES

Ramirez homers twice as Padres rout Mariners 14-6

SAN DIEGO (AP) — Alexei Ramirez homered twice and matched his career high with five RBIs, and Adam Rosales and Wil Myers also homered for the San Diego Padres, who beat the Seattle Mariners 14-6 Wednesday night several hours after executive chairman Ron Fowler strongly criticized the team’s poor recent play.

Ramirez had a pair of two-run homers and an RBI single. Jon Jay had four hits while Myers and Yangervis Solarte also each had three hits. Myers finished a triple shy of the cycle. The Padres snapped a four-game losing streak, winning for the second time in 10 games.

On Wednesday morning, Fowler told the team’s flagship radio station, the Mighty 1090, that the Padres’ recent performances have been “embarrassing” and “pathetic.” His comments came a day after James Shields allowed 10 runs in 2 2/3 innings of a 16-4 loss at Seattle.

MARINERS-HERNANDEZ

Mariners place RHP Felix Hernandez on DL with calf strain

SAN DIEGO (AP) — The Seattle Mariners have placed Felix Hernandez on the 15-day disabled list with a right calf strain, just the third time in his career the veteran right-hander has landed on the DL.

The Mariners announced the move Wednesday and recalled left-hander James Paxton from Triple-A Tacoma. Paxton joined the team in San Diego, where he was set to start Wednesday night.

Hernandez is 4-4 this season with a 2.86 ERA. The 30-year-old didn’t travel with the team to San Diego and was examined by Dr. Ed Khalfayan in Seattle on Wednesday morning before the roster move was made.

There’s been much attention placed on the decreased velocity of his fastball, but Hernandez has remained a highly effective pitcher, if not a bit inconsistent. Opponents are hitting just .217 against him.

STORM-FEVER

Kizer, Mitchell score career highs, Fever beat Storm 85-75

INDIANAPOLIS (AP) — Lynetta Kizer scored 20 points, Tiffany Mitchell added 19 — both career highs — and the Indiana Fever beat the Seattle Storm 85-75 on Wednesday night.

Indiana led by 22 points with 1:04 left in the third quarter but Seattle went on a 9-0 run, spanning the break, to pull to 72-59 with 8:14 remaining. The Fever answered with the next seven points as the Storm did not score again until the 4:37 mark.

Marissa Coleman added 11 points for Indiana (3-3), which is ranked No. 6 in the AP WNBA power poll. Briann January came off the bench in her first game of the season and scored four points in 16 minutes.

Mitchell had 13 first-half points, Kizer added 11 and the Fever built a 51-38 halftime lead after shooting 21 of 34 (61.8 percent) from the field.

Breanna Stewart scored 16 of her 22 points in the second half and Sue Bird had 14 points and six assists for eighth-ranked Seattle (2-4).

Indiana has won five straight games against Seattle and nine of its last 10 against the Storm.

MLS-SOUNDERS-UNITED

Late goals by Morris and Jones give Sounders 2-0 over DC

WASHINGTON (AP) — Jordan Morris and Joevin Jones scored 4 minutes apart late in the second half and the Seattle Sounders beat D.C. United 2-0 on Wednesday night to end a three-game losing streak.

The Sounders (5-6-1) had only scored 10 goals in 11 games, including one goal in three losses since a 2-0 win on May 7th. D.C. United has not scored against Seattle in their last six meetings, going 0-5-1.

Both teams were without two players preparing for Copa America with their national team, including Seattle’s Clint Dempsey and D.C.’s Steve Birnbaum with the U.S. team.

NCAA MEN

Sulman Raza gives Oregon its first NCAA golf title

EUGENE, Ore. (AP) — Sulman Raza made a 7-foot birdie putt on the third extra hole to outlast Taylor Funk and give Oregon its first NCAA golf title, 3-2 over short-handed Texas Wednesday.

A junior from Eugene, Raza rallied in regulation at Eugene Country Club and finished off Funk and the Longhorns with the birdie on par-4 10th on the 21st hole. Raza also scored the deciding point in the Ducks’ 3-2 semifinal victory over Illinois Tuesday.

Spotted a 1-0 lead when Texas star Beau Hossler withdrew against Zach Foushee because of a left shoulder injury, Oregon became the first host school to win since Oklahoma in 1989 at Oak Tree.

Edwin Yi also won for Oregon, beating Gavin Hall 4 and 3 in the first match. The Ducks entered the tournament 26th in the NCAA ranking and were the number 6 seed in match play.

Scottie Scheffler and Doug Ghim won for Texas. Scheffler beat individual champion Aaron Wise 4 and 3, and Ghim topped Thomas Lim 2 and 1.

WRESTLERS-COACH ABUSE

Men sue Washington city over coach’s sexual abuse

(Information in the following story is from: The News Tribune, http://www.thenewstribune.com)

TACOMA, Wash. (AP) — Two men who say they were sexually abused by a youth wrestling coach are suing the Washington city of Puyallup.

The News Tribune reports that court documents say the men say Kenneth Scott Carroll molested them while they were on the junior wrestling team. The men are now in their early 20s but joined the wrestling team at 4 and 11 years old.

According to the lawsuit, the city and several sports groups were negligent when they allowed Carroll to coach with little supervision, failed to do a proper background check and let him take kids on unsupervised overnight trips.

Carroll, now 43, was sentenced to more than 18 years in prison in February for sexual abuse in Oregon.

U.S. Attorney’s Office spokeswoman Emily Langlie says the office hasn’t yet decided whether to file charges against Carroll.
