SEATTLE ARENA-BACKLASH

Seattle mayor decries sexist attacks to sports arena vote

SEATTLE (AP) — Seattle’s mayor and an investor have condemned sports fans’ sexist attacks against the mostly female City Council after its vote sidetracked a proposed arena project aimed at luring back the NBA.

All five women on the nine-member council voted against selling a street to investor Chris Hansen, complicating his plan to build an arena in a Seattle neighborhood to house a professional basketball or hockey team. The four men backed the proposal.

Many attacked the councilwomen on social media and through emails, leading Hansen and Mayor Ed Murray to speak out this week.

Hansen says the “misogynistic insults, vile comments and threats” to the councilwomen must stop.

Hansen wants to bring the NBA back to Seattle after the SuperSonics left for Oklahoma City following the 2007 to 2008 season and was renamed the Thunder.

SEAHAWKS-LYNCH RETIRES

Beast Mode goes silent as Seattle puts Lynch on retired list

RENTON, Wash. (AP) — Beast Mode is officially in retirement mode.

The Seattle Seahawks have placed running back Marshawn Lynch on the NFL’s reserved/retired list, making official what was implied in February when Lynch indicated he was ready to end his football career.

The star running back was placed on the list Thursday. It was a procedural step, but one that needed to be taken to make Lynch’s intended retirement official.

Lynch stole attention from the fourth quarter of the Super Bowl in February when he posted a picture on Twitter with a pair of green football cleats hanging from a telephone or electrical wire. His agent confirmed a day later that Lynch intended to retire.

Seattle stockpiled running backs in this year’s draft, indicating the running back who led the Seahawks to their first Super Bowl title was ready to step away.

MARINERS-ASTROS

Cano drives in 3 in 9th to give Mariners 6-3 win over Astros

HOUSTON (AP) — Robinson Cano had three hits and his tiebreaking three-run double in the ninth inning lifted the Seattle Mariners to their fourth straight win, 6-3, over the Houston Astros on Thursday night.

The bases were loaded with one out in the ninth when Cano cleared them with his double off Luke Gregerson (0-1) that sailed just out of reach of center fielder Carlos Gomez.

Cano, who has at least two hits in five straight games, also drove in a run in the third inning to give him four RBIs and an American League-leading 30 this season.

Nick Vincent (2-1) pitched 1 2/3 scoreless innings for the win and Steve Cishek allowed one hit in the ninth for his ninth save.

Jose Altuve homered and tied a career-high with four hits and had two RBIs for the Astros.

WARRIORS-CURRY

Stephen Curry unlikely to return for Warriors on Saturday

OAKLAND, Calif. (AP) — Stephen Curry did not practice Thursday with the Golden State Warriors and is unlikely to play in Game 3 of the Western Conference semifinals at Portland.

Curry did some work on the court but has yet to scrimmage. Coach Steve Kerr said “probably not” when asked about Curry playing Saturday.

Kerr said, “Everything has gone very smoothly. He hasn’t had any setbacks.”

Defending champion Golden State leads the best-of-seven series against Portland 2-0. The Warriors had Wednesday off from practice after winning Game 2 on Tuesday night at Oracle Arena.

Curry injured his knee April 24th when he slipped on a wet spot just before halftime at Houston in the first round of the playoffs.

USTA picks Beaverton, Oregon, to host Davis Cup QF in July

WHITE PLAINS, N.Y. (AP) — The U.S. Tennis Association has chosen the Tualatin Hills Tennis Center in Beaverton, Oregon, to host the Americans’ Davis Cup quarterfinal against Croatia on July 15th through 17th.

The USTA announced the site on Thursday and says it will construct a 6,000-seat stadium around the center’s current main court.

These are the first Davis Cup matches in the area since the United States beat Russia in 2007 to win its most recent championship in the international competition.

Tickets will go on sale June 3rd.
