City Council to consider Rhody street closures

Florence City Councilors will hear a request tonight to close Maple Street between First and Bay for a Rhododendron Festival vendor fair.

Under the proposal, the one-block stretch of Maple would close at noon Friday, the 20th and remain that way until seven pm Sunday.  A number of food and merchandise vendors will be set up at that stretch.  The fair will be open Saturday the 21st and Sunday the 22nd.

The Home Grown Pub had also planned to request closure of another block in the same area on Saturday the 21st for live music and a market featuring locally produced goods.  They’ve decided not to pursue that.

The council meets at six at City Hall… just prior to that, at 5:30, the combined Florence Budget Committee will hear the presentation of the budget message for the 2016-17 fiscal year.

Our Town for May to feature candidates

The two candidates for Lane County District Attorney will present their thoughts to radio listeners in Western Lane County this week.

Patty Perlow and Clayton Tullos will appear separately on Coast Radio’s Our Town Wednesday afternoon, then again Thursday morning.

Perlow was the Chief Deputy DA for 9-years.  She was appointed to the District Attorney’s office in August by Governor Kate Brown after her predecessor, Alex Gardner, stepped down to take a job with the Oregon State Police.

Perlow’s challenger, Clayton Tullos, is an attorney in Eugene.

Our Town will air on KCST Wednesday from four to six, then again Thursday morning from ten to noon on KCFM.

Also featured on the program will be conversations with several of the candidates for Lane County Justice of the Peace.

Rebel Ride featured during Rhody

The Fourth annual “Let It Ride” motorcycle show at Three Rivers Casino and Resort will be held Saturday, May 21st from one to three pm.  Entries will be judged on a variety of criteria with proceeds from the entry fees going to benefit the St. Jude Children’s Hospital.  The show will also feature the “Heart of Gold”, a custom motorcycle owned and created by Portland’s Les Covington.  It has been featured in Easy Rider magazine and has won numerous awards in Sturgis, South Dakota.

Three Rivers will also be the starting line for the Rebel Rally poker run that morning beginning at eight.  Proceeds from the run will benefit veteran’s organizations.

Oregon Dunes Triathlon

For the fourth straight year, hard-core and dedicated athletes will be competing in a grueling competition on the Central Oregon Coast.

The Oregon Dunes Triathlon is set to begin Saturday morning at East Woahink Day Use area at Honeyman State Park.  That’s where competitors will swim in Woahink Lake, then get on their bicycles and ride along Canary and Clear Lake Roads.  The race finishes with a run through Honeyman State Park… including a sprint up the “Big Dune” at Cleawox.

Organizers expect the largest field they’ve had yet.  More than 200 competitors will participate.

Volunteers are still needed to help marshal the course… information can be had by calling Dunes City Hall at 541-997-3338.
