PORTLAND, Ore. (AP) — A federal study says Oregon’s child welfare system is failing at keeping children in state care safe and healthy. The Oregonian reports that the study found that caseworkers are taking too long to check on allegations of abuse and neglect. It also says the state has struggled to keep children who’ve been abused from being harmed again, either in state custody or afterward, and parents aren’t able to see their kids as often as they should.
LAS VEGAS (AP) — A federal magistrate judge is considering whether trial can be held next month in Las Vegas for rancher Cliven Bundy and 18 other defendants in an armed confrontation with government officers two years ago. Federal prosecutors want to push the date back due to the number of defendants and the exceptionally large amount of evidence that’ll need to be exchanged with defense attorneys. Three of the 19 defendants say they’ll exercise their right to a speedy trial.
EUGENE, Ore. (AP) — A 36-year-old man has been convicted of murder in the death of a man whose body was found on tidal mudflats near a wastewater treatment plant in Coos Bay. The Register-Guard reports that Shawn Yamate was also found guilty Thursday of conspiracy to tamper with a witness, attempted tampering with physical evidence and abuse of a corpse.
WOODLAND, Wash. (AP) — Authorities say one person was killed and two were injured after a small plane ran off the runway at an airport in Woodland. The Columbian reports emergency personnel were called to the scene at about 3 p.m. Thursday for a single engine plane that had driven off the end of the runway, through a fence and up an embankment.
