PORTLAND, Ore. (AP) – A Portland man who failed to register as a sex offender following a sex abuse conviction in 1994 is facing new charges of rape and assault.

KOIN-TV reports that 48-year-old Robert Shelby appeared in court Monday on several charges related to the March 28 incident.

Officers say they had responded to a Portland neighborhood to a report that a woman had been sexually assaulted by a man who broke into her apartment.

Court documents say the woman identified Shelby after police showed her his mugshot.

Police say Shelby hadn’t registered as a sex offender since September 2014. He was convicted of second-degree sex abuse in 1994.

Police say Shelby denied the allegations against him in an interview with detectives.

PROSPECT, Ore. (AP) – A lake home exploded in Jackson County and residents say they think the attack was linked to previous threats they have received.

The Mail Tribune reports that Jackson County officials responded Saturday after an explosion at the 32-acre property on Lost Creek Lake.

Mike and Karyl McNall say they are planning to meet with the FBI and Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives agents about the explosion.

Mike McNall runs a medical billing consulting firm for long-term-stay and retirement homes. He says he believes the trespassers on his property and subsequent explosion on Saturday are connected to an October attack where masked men asked for Pacific Retirement Services therapy files.

GRANDMOTHER SMOTHERED

Defense asks for release in grandmother-smothering case

(Information in the following story is from: The Bulletin, http://www.bendbulletin.com)

BEND, Ore. (AP) – A Bend woman accused of smothering her 92-year-old grandmother is seeking her release from jail.

The Bulletin reports that 45-year-old Angela Judd’s attorney said in a memo filed last week that his client does not pose a threat to public safety and that there is little physical evidence in the case.

Judd is accused of killing her grandmother, Nada Bodholdt, on New Year’s Eve.

Under Oregon law, when a defendant is charged with murder, she can’t be released from jail when there is a strong presumption that the person is guilty. A judge will decide whether there is such a presumption in Judd’s case on April 21.

Bodholdt was initially thought to have died of natural causes. The possibility of foul play only arose when Judd allegedly made a statement to her social worker.
