KENOSHA, Wis. (AP) – A former Wisconsin police officer has been sentenced to 35 years in prison for killing an Oregon woman and ditching her body in a suitcase along a highway. Steven Zelich was sentenced yesterday in the 2012 death of 19-year-old Jenny Gamez of Cottage Grove. Authorities said Gamez died during a sexual encounter. The 54-year-old Zelich is also accused of killing a Minnesota woman whose body was found in a suitcase along the same highway.
BEND, Ore. (AP) – Authorities say three people have died in a head-on collision on U.S. Highway 20 about 25 miles southeast of Bend. The Bend Bulletin reports that State Police say Jim Reynolds and Fayme Reynolds, both from Bend, and Wesley Earp, of Redmond, were killed in the crash near Millican. Police say Earp’s westbound van went out of control and crashed into the Reynolds’ eastbound SUV.
MEDFORD, Ore. (AP) – Jackson County’s Community Justice director who was placed on administrative leave following his arrest on drug charges is no longer employed with the county. The Mail Tribune reports that officials wouldn’t say whether Shane Hagey had been fired or resigned. Hagey was arrested Dec. 30 for allegedly buying methamphetamine from an informant during a Medford police investigation.
ASTORIA, Ore. (AP) – The trial for a woman accused of killing one daughter and injuring another at a coastal Oregon resort has been postponed after a mental evaluation didn’t determine whether she was fit to stand trial. The Daily Astorian reports that Jessica Smith’s new trial date has been set for June 2017. A court-appointed psychologist couldn’t determine whether Smith is mentally unfit to stand trial, but found that she suffers from PTSD.
