BEND, Ore. (AP) – A former Deschutes County sheriff’s captain arrested on federal charges of theft and money-laundering has a court hearing today. KTVZ-TV reports the U.S. Department of Justice confirmed Scott Beard has been released from jail. Trial is set for April.

EUGENE, Ore. (AP) – The University of Oregon’s police chief has abruptly left the post. The Register-Guard says the police department issued a statement late Friday saying Carolyn McDermed “announced her retirement.” In September, a federal jury awarded $755,000 to a former University of Oregon public safety officer after finding McDermed and a top lieutenant retaliated against him for speaking out about department wrongdoing.

BOARDMAN, Oregon (AP) – The U.S. Department of Agriculture has approved an $11 million loan for a project to build a biorefinery in Boardman that would convert farm waste into natural gas and liquid fertilizer. The East Oregonian reports Minnesota-based Novus Energy plans to build the $25 million facility at the Port of Morrow. The company plans to break ground this summer.

GRESHAM, Ore. (AP) – Gresham Police says a 33-year-old man has turned himself in to police a day after a hit-and-run crash that seriously injured three pedestrians. Police say Sky Marsh, of Gresham, surrendered late Saturday. Police say three people were walking on the sidewalk Friday morning when a car slammed into them. A 33-year-old woman was critically hurt, while a 33-year-old man and a 23-year-old woman suffered serious injuries. All are expected to survive.
