SALEM, Ore. (AP) – Oregon lawmakers flock to the Capitol today to begin what’s already being considered the busiest short session to date. The next 35 days will be a whirlwind of proposed budget tweaks, closing loopholes in existing laws and a wide spectrum of massive policy changes that could fundamentally impact Oregonians’ daily lives.
EUGENE, Ore. (AP) – A driver for the state Department of Fish and Wildlife who crashed a tanker truck carrying 11,000 juvenile salmon has been found guilty of DUI. The Register-Guard reports that Ray Lewis of Umpqua has been sentenced to two years of probation and ordered to pay $375,000 in restitution and cleanup costs. Lewis is appealing his conviction. He says he had alcohol in his system because he has auto-brewery syndrome, in which his body converts food into alcohol.
MADRAS, Ore. (AP) – The Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office in central Oregon says nearly 1,100 pounds of unwanted prescription drugs have been dropped off for safe disposal in the last year and a half. Officials tell The Bulletin that the drug take-back program has boxes set up at the sheriff’s office in Madras, Culver City Hall and Crooked River Ranch Fire and Rescue. Officials say disposing the prescription drugs means they won’t fall into the hands of teenagers.
PORTLAND, Ore. (AP) – CJ McCollum and Damian Lillard scored 21 points apiece, and the Portland Trail Blazers handed the Minnesota Timberwolves their 11th straight road loss with a 96-93 victory last night. Portland extended its winning streak to four.
