RICE HILL, Ore. (AP) – Authorities say an exchange of gunfire in the Rice Hill area about 50 miles south of Eugene has left a 24-year-old man and two dogs dead. The Douglas County Sheriff’s Office tells The Register-Guard that Ryan Scevers died in the Saturday morning altercation. Authorities are investigating.

BURNS, Ore. (AP) – Four holdouts remain at the Malheur National Wildlife Refuge, which was seized on Jan. 2 by a group upset over federal land-use policy. A month-long occupation started out with demands that two jailed ranchers be freed. It has since led to the arrest of the occupation leader and others.

COTTAGE GROVE, Ore. (AP) – A high school student is suspected of bringing a toy gun to school and making threats. The Register-Guard reports he has been suspended and is not being identified by Cottage Grove police. Authorities are investigating. Police say the boy will be allowed to return to class if it is determined he is not a threat to Cottage Grove High School students and staff.

MADRAS, Ore. (AP) – The Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office in central Oregon says nearly 1,100 pounds of unwanted prescription drugs have been dropped off for safe disposal in the last year and a half. Officials tell The Bulletin that the drug take-back program has boxes set up at the sheriff’s office in Madras, Culver City Hall and Crooked River Ranch Fire and Rescue. Officials say disposing the prescription drugs means they won’t fall into the hands of teenagers.
